Notes for WILLIAM D. ALBERT M. LONG:
[Bobby Howard3.FTW]

According to Kaufman History, Vol 11, 1984, published by
Kaufman Co Historical Commission. William was a
Medical Doctor. He was murdered Jan. 18, 1863 by
unknown persons who shot him with a hunting arrow (Not
Indian-he fought off his attackers, according to the Inquest
and it was determined by shoe prints that it was white men
who killed him, also there were no Indian problems here
after 1850)

He was shot in the back while he was feeding his livestock.
His probate is filed in Kaufman Co, TX, he is buried in Fox
Cemetery, Kaufman Co., TX. Kaufman History says he
had 15 children.

There was a William D Long who is in Nacogdoches Co, in
1840 (In 1843, Rusk County was created from
Nacogdoches Co.) He owned 4 slaves and 12 cattle. The

Probate of William D Long: Researched by Kathey Hunt

1. On none of the papers in the packet, nor in any of the
handwritten records in the minutes, is W D Long's actual
death date given. in one record it says "Long, dec'd who
departed this life prior to 1865 in said county of Kaufman
Texas..." also See the TRANSCRIPTION BELOW which
has info on the date of death that is left blank in an
affidavit as if No one was really certain when he died....

2. Probate Minutes record Book #1 pg 336

Nancy long on 28 Sep 1867 makes application for probate
on W D Long's estate, requesting she be appointed as
Executrix /Asministrtator of the estate, stating that W D
long died Intestate. (no will) & that he had no Real
property. She swears & signs a Statement that there is 320
acres of land which is the ONLY Community Real
property, along with their household goods, but no other
property which belonged to W D Long.

However, on the same date 2 Appraisers for the Court
appeared and stated that W S Long had 640 acres of land
within Kaufman Co. these men were Henry Spurgeon &
Thomas Stayhorn. Because of this Nancy Long's request to
be made Executrix is denied & Henry Spurgeon is
appointed Administrator with Strayhorn as Suretor.
**There is a Document I sent you which also states this **It
appears that she waited this long to probate the estate
thinking it would deter any action which might come
forward against the estate (a very common practice back
then) However, in this case
I believe Long was too well known and his assets were also
well-known by his peers.

3. Probate Min Bk 1, pg 371

Dated June term 1867 after an affidavit from Mr Spurgeon
suggests that there may be other Real property belonging to
W D Long's eststate in RUSK CO TX The court
appoints 3 men to travel there & Investigate the allegation -
they are Cassidy Sanders, James Draper Sr & John
Wherry.

4.
Probate Min Bk 1, pge 383
Nancy Long again asks permission from the court to be
appointed Executrix of the estate & she is denied. She
requests permission to liquidate some real property in
Kaufman County stating that she is destitute & she is
denied that request until full appraisal of ALL W D Long's
holdings are reported by the 3 Suretors. Also on this
page is a full Inventory of the Personal property of W D
Long, made by Spurgeoon, which was made in case the
estate had to be liquidated.

5. Probate Misc Minutes Bk 1, pg 417 Term Spring-1869
The Suretors report to the Court that W D Long holds title
in Rusk Co TX to: 1276 Acres of land in one parcel
243 acres of land in a second parcel 20 acres of land in a
third parcel. All Clear title with no Debts owed in that
county against said estate.

6. Probate Misc Bk 1, pg 465
Fall Term 1871
Court concedes that there are no debts owed by the estate
of W D Long & all property s reverted into the holdings of
Nancy Long.

The probate confirms the land in Rusk Co that M. Ritchie
was reporting.

OH , here's a good one...seems bad times with
the law followed the Longs
somewhat...I found where Jacob "Jake" Long
stood trial for murder...and in the
news story there is mention that his brother,
Robert Long, was an accomplice.
Jacob was acquitted & no charges were ever
filed on Robert that I can find.
They were accused of killing a man named
Willingham / Wallingham in Terrell in
1874, but Jacob was acquitted in 1881.Seems it
took them awhile to get him back to Kaufman
Co --he was in Jack Co & everyone was afraid
to go out there after him because of the Indians!
From what I have here, he went back to Jack

diseased Jaw Bone. I enlisted in Confederate army 1863

Notes for Robert Albert Claude Long:

Note: Robert and Sarah and their family are enumerated
twice in 1880. I'm not sure which was done first and which
second. I have the original census for Kaufman Co but not
Wise Co. Evidently Robert and family went to Wise Co to
be with brother, Edward D. in 1880. The children’s ages

This is probably also the same R. A. Long who, along with
G. W. Cariker, witnesses Louisa Sealy Freeman's
application for a widow's Confederate pension on 4 Sept.
1909. Robert A. Long, Confederate Service, Book:
Terrell’s Texas Cavalry, By John W. Spencer

In this book R. A. Long is shown as being in Company A.
Also shown as being in Co. A are T. F. Dickey (Thomas F.
Dickey) and J. A. Carlisle (John A. Carlisle). These two
men are listed as witness on Robert Long’s application for
pension. The book says R. A. Long enlisted at Kaufman,
TX on Aug. 5, 1863. The two men on the pension
application say he enlisted at Galveston, TX. T. F. Dickey is
shown as enlisting on Dec. 15, 1862 at Prairieville, TX and
J. A. Carlisle enlisted on Dec. 1, 1863 at Prairieville, TX.

This above information was taken from the only known
Muster Roll taken on Feb. 29, 1864. (According to the
book)

The following sketch of Company A is in the book:
Company A consisted of men mainly from Prairieville, TX
and a few from Kaufman and Canton. These were men
primarily of Norwegian descent, Six foot, four inch Israel
Spikes was the original captain, being elected on Dec. 15,
1862, when the company was formed. Spikes resigned
about a year later and William G. Hill became
captain.(This is the captain that R. A. Long mentions in his
Pension Application)

The discipline, instruction, arms and clothing of Company
A were rated as good on the February 29, 1864 company
report. Military appearance was shown as only fair, and
accouterments as good, but without bayonet scabbards.

At the disbandment in May, 1865 at Wild Cat Crossing on
the Trinity River these men were only a short distance from
home. Many of the men moved to the Clifton, TX, area
after the war and started new home and lives.

They were in the battle at Mansfield, Louisiana or Sabine
Cross Roads. April 8, 1864 Today that is the location of
Mansfield Battlefield Park and Museum. The were also in a
battle at Pleasant Hill, LA. From birth certificate of son,
George Albert Long, he is farming near Corsicana, TX in
1888.

Following Info from Mark’s Notes:
According to note in Ruby's handwriting, J. A. Long was
Sheriff of Freestone County.

Appears in 1860 Rusk County Census (book by Dunn), next
door to W. D. Long.
He owns $1000 in property, lives with wife Sarah and
children W. W. and John.

Appears in 1870 Kaufman County Census, dwelling #445,
age 35, White, physician, $4000 personal property, born
Tennessee, with wife Sarah J.,31, keeping house,
born Mississippi, children William, 15, John R., 12, James
C., 10, George T., 4 and Edward A., 1. Children all born in
Texas.

But in 1880 he is gone from the census, and Sarah J. is
living alone.

VERY interesting note on the 1870 census: Next door to
John in 1870, and to his widow in 1880, is a Black family of
Henry Long, wife Jane, children Nellie, Rinda (Marinda,
1880), Alexander (Ector 1880), and Susannah. Are these
some former Long slaves? We know that William D.
Long, John's father owned slaves at one time.
