All those bad mother in law jokes don’t pertain to my mother in law. She treated me better than she did her own kids. The best cobbler and Fried Pie maker in the whole Wide World. I think the one thing she enjoyed most was cooking for people and watching them eat. I couldn’t get her to set down and eat, she was always waiting on someone. She loved for Bill to bring his friends home to eat dinner, so she would have an excuse to cook. I came to work on the Fire Department when Joe had to retire because of a heart attack. Everyone had a good word to say about Joe. He wasn’t afraid of anything. I went fishing a lot with Joe and Bill Hines. When you were with those two guys, there was never a dull moment. When I went with them, I made them let me drive or I wouldn’t go. One time I was fishing with Joe on Possum Kingdom, at that time the lake had a lot of dead trees. I was riding up in front of the little old aluminum boat with a 10 HP motor and Joe was driving. We were going straight for a tree and we just kept on going, I looked back and Joe and he was asleep. I started doing some loud hollering. The family lived at 2303 Buchanan and Bill slept in the middle room next to a window. One night Bill was in bed, the window was open and I stuck my hand through the window and grabbed Bill. He secreamed like a Panter. They had a hard time getting him to sleep with the window open. Bill enjoyied fishing, later on we had a cabin on Lake Kickapoo and he loved to come visit and fish. One time we were fishing on Lake Arrowhead. We were catching crappie as fast as we could get our bait in the water, but we run out of minnows. We untied went and bought some minnows, came back and started fishing in the very same place, but we never caught another fish. When they opened the Race Track near Weatherford, Bill started going to the horse races and he really enjoyed it. Bill worked for grocery stores most of his life. He was working for Winn Dixie in Weathered when he passed away. He touched the lives of many people. Before and during his funeral so many people told us how much they enjoyed seeing Bill each day and how he was always so friendly.
