Find Family

I am researching my English, Scots and Scandinavian lineage through my seventeenth century ancestors who immigrated to the English and Dutch colonies of Massachusetts and New Amsterdam. They include a Norwegian-Dutch woman, Anneke Jans Bogardus, whose estate occasioned the longest litigation in American judicial history, unresolved until nearly two and a half centuries following her death. Two of the first women hung for witchcraft in the Salem Village hysteria of 1692, Elizabeth Howe and Rebecca Nurse, are also numbered among my ancestors.

During the Revolutionary War, four of my ancestors earned fame fighting in the Continental Army or with the frontier Militia against their cousin, General William Howe, the supreme commanding British forces. One of them, Major Bezaleel Howe, was personally selected by General George Washington and charged with the task of transporting his personal papers through enemy lines. These were the first documents to be included in what is today the Library of Congress. General Washington also attended Major Howe’s wedding. Later Major Howe served with General "Mad" Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Many others have lived their lives in the midst of America's and Europe's great events. Some were farmers; at least one was a cordwainer. Among my ancestors are European royals, nobles and commoners. Some were famous. Others were infamous. All of them are interesting.

My wife's ancestors are among the earliest Spanish immigrants to the colony of New Spain. Descended from the Celtic Galician clans of northern Iberia - the ancestors of the Irish and Scottish Celts - her ancestors settled in Baja California in the seventeenth century. Among their descendents, her ancestors include individuals who established the pueblo of San Diego in Alta California, served as Alcaldé (Mayor) of Los Angeles and as the senior delegate at the Bear Flag Republic of California's Constitutional Convention in 1849. One was famous for his skill at fencing with grizzly bears.

Their lives and stories are fascinating. I welcome and appreciate the contributions and questions of others who share our lineage and our quest. Please let me know if you find this page useful, if I may be of help to you or if you are able to fill gaps in my research.

I hope to hear from you soon.
