Lester Ransom Howard

Updated March 11, 2003

***
Lester Ransom Howard was born in Palmyra, New York, on April 16, 1860. His first of several moves westward was to Hannibal, Missouri. In 1880 he married Martha Herrin (born November 27, 1864) in La Plata, Missouri. Their first three children (Ina, Nellie, and Opal) were born in Missouri.
The Howard family saw the west as the land of opportunity, and Lester began working for the Great Northern Railroad, moving his family with him. They reached Minot, North Dakota, where Elizabeth was born. After Lester broke his foot at the railroad freight house, he acquired a team of horses and began hauling freight while Mattie ran the Company boarding house. The family followed the railroad to Havre, Montana, then followed the spur to Great Falls, Montana, arriving in 1892. There, they bought a relinquishment on which they homesteaded. Bernice, Lester, Roy, and Earl were born in Montana.

I would appreciate any information about Lester Ransom Howard's parents. The information we have is scanty because he was adopted, or perhaps raised by the Wescott family.
