Re: LACKEY, Waterbury, New Haven, CT

Looking for my gggrandfather's child, Mamie (Mary?) LACKEY, b Dec 1880. She was the daughter of John LACKEY, b Nov 1859, New York, and John's first wife ??????.

This first marriage is not officially documented yet, however his second one is. According to the 1900 Waterbury, New Haven, CT census, he had been married to Lumena M. LA VIGNE (b Dec 1864) for 9 yrs. The marriage cert for John and Lumena in 1891 also reflects that this was a second marriage for John, leading us to believe that perhaps his first wife, Mary's mother, passed away.

Marriage cert to Lumena LA VIGNE on June 3, 1891, shows the name spelled "LACKEY". Birth records for children, Jean Crawford (1892) and Francis Margaret (1897), and a death cert for Francis (1898), reflect "LACKEY". Then we have the 1900 Census and city directories for Waterbury, CT from 1909-1912 reflecting the name changed to "LACKIE" thereafter for this line of the family.

Additionally, Mamie LACKIE is showing up on the 1900 Census as John's daughter, and not Lumena's child.

UPDATE: December, 2002--FOUND! Mamie (Mary) LACKEY, circa 1920-1930 CT

I previously posted a msg searching for one of my elusive ancestors, Mamie (Mary) LACKEY. I'm pleased to announce that she has been found!!

I could not find Mary until searching the 1930 CT Census, whereas I found her widowed father, John LACKIE (spelling changed), at age 70, living with his daughter and family. Mary married Walter W. MCLELLAND and had six children! When doing the search on Ancestry previously, the name results were available for the 1930 census, but the actual image was not until just recently. I was pretty sure that was my John LACKIE, but could not 'see' all the info yet.

I could then move backward to the 1920 CT Census, using MCLELLAND, and found the 8 of them living in Waterbury, CT. John was not living with them at the time.

I am so excited to have found this new line! And I never would have, had John not survived until age 70 AND been living with them, as I had no idea of her married name.

MCLELLAND INFORMATION:

Walter MCLELLAND married Mary LACKEY appx. 1901-1904 in Waterbury, CT. Walter MCLELLAND immigrated with his family circa 1884, from Quebec, Canada. Parent's were James and Anny, siblings were Johny, Malcom, Isabella, William and Alonzo.

BLOUIN INFORMATION:

Was Walter's mother, Anny, previously married? It would appear so, as in the 1900 in Waterbury, New Haven CT census, Walter and Anny were living with a Louis BLOUIN and wife, Amanda. Louis was listed as Walter's brother, Anny as Louis' mother.

****UPDATE***February 9th, 2004 A Blouin decendent contacted me about the info above. It appears that the words 'in-law' should be after Louis and Anny's name on the census. Walter and Annie were living with Louis Blouin...and Louis had married Amanda McLelland, Walter's sister! Ah! As the world turns! BUt now things are so much clearer!

NAME VARIATIONS/CHANGE FOR LACKEY:

Documents reflect that my great, great grandfather, John, spelled it "LACKIE" (in the 1900 Census), but it was documented prior to that (1891 marriage cert and 1880 Census) as "LACKEY".

There are various reasons a persons name changes spelling, as long as it sounds the same. The census takers are a great influence on names and how they are spelled, as well as whoever the informants were.

We haven't yet discovered why John changed the spelling (and may never know!), so we will continue to research both (and any other) variations.
