While the origins of the HOWELL Family seem to surface from the area of Liberty Chapel, Attala County, Mississippi and Mexico, they settled and made their future in the mining town of Shafter, Texas, now a ghost town in the 1920's. William B. Howell Sr., was the only son of William S. Howell and Mattie A. Smith. Siblings were Mozel,Ethel, Estelle and Gladys. Married to Blasa Ortega, daughter to Teofilo Ortega and Severnina Portillo, of Presidio, Texas, they had two sons, William B. Howell Jr. & James E. Howell, together. There were two additional sons; Arthur O. Howell & Wilfredo Monje Jr., aka Richard Jenkins, of Blasa Ortega. The core of the family seems to have gone their own way during the early to mid-1920's. The final separation of the family occurred after a tragic shootout with a local lawman/mining employee, Robert E. Speed, on January 1, 1940. |
