Again - love to father, sisters & brothers - With a great deal of very best wishes - I will thee Good by. Love thy Boy - Allen A LETTER TO GEORGE J. LETCHWORTH (Allen uncle) from C D MAC DOUGALL Head Quarters 3rd Brig 1st Division. 2nd Corp Near PetersburgJune 25. 1864 George J Letchworth Esq Dear Sir; It is my painful duty to inform you of the death of Sgt Allen E, Hoxie of Co. I.He was killed in the disparate charge on the evening of the 16th made by our Corp.he was shot thru the body with a grape shot sticking him in the left side just above the hip bone and passing entirely through his body.He was buried by one of his comrades and his grave marked by a head board.I asked if anyone in his company had (written home) and being informed that they had not - I thought it my duty to inform you knowing you a relative of his and not knowing anyone nearer him than you.In ____?______ C D Mac Dougall Col111thNY Vol A LETTER FROM GEORGE PECKHAM to MRS HOXIE Camp 111th New York State Volunteers near Petersburg, Va July 10th 1864 Mrs Hoxie; Yours of June 24th reached me some time but this is the first opportunity I have to answer it.In answer toyour inquiry about Allen I would say that his grave is marked by a board with his name Co. & Reg marked upon it & by various land marks so that there will be no difficulty in finding it when the proper time comes.Edwin Hanford & Corporal Nathan Booth buried him.The boy that was with him when he died is of the recruits and is named Rufus Johnson he has since been sent off sick. It is hard to look back over the last two months & see what we have passed through & then to look around & see the number that have left us since then.We left camp with 45 men in the Co. but 9 of us are here now.The rest are some of them numbered with the died others are suffering with wounds in the hospital & still others are in there hands of the rebels.Oh this is a cruel thing & I long for the time to comewhen we may be allowed to return to our homes & there shall be "no more war". As Allen's money matters you will find his accounts in the diary - He indebted to me $4.00.He had no money with him at the time of his death. Having been mustered & copied the accounts from the Diary I will now send it to you by the mail that carries this.I sent his jacket knife to his sister Josie,These are all of the things that I know of that belonged to him. Poor David Rap - his stay with us was short he was shot through the head with a minnie ball & died instantly. As we had to fall back from the ground where he fell he lay all night between the two lines & was literally pierced with the bullets. In the morning we drove them back & held the ground & buried him where he fell.Sgt Chase took whatlittle motions could be found on him & sent them to his wife. With many thanks for your prayers in my behalf I am your friend &Allen's Comrade George Peckham . |
