Was born in Whitemarsh, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in 183. He was living in Philadelphia and working as a paper hanger in 1861, when the Civil War broke out. Emanuel enlisted in Company I, 95 th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, also known as Gosline’s Zonaves, C olonel John M Gosline commanding. The regiment served with the Army of the Potomac.
