Alternately listed as Johann Jacob or Philipp Jacob Hotz. A butcher as were his sons, grandson, great grandson and other male descendants down to George Robert Lawrence, son of Edward Lawrence. (10 generations of butchers) Philipp was a resident of Wertheim during the 30 Years War (1618-1648). In October of 1631 the Swedes occupied the city and castle of Wertheim. After the battle of Nördlingen, Imperial troops lay the castle in ruins with a barrage of fire and the Swedes then retreated. In 1647 they occupied the castle again and in 1648 a Bavarian regiment made an unsuccessful attempt to recapture the castle. There was a Johann Philip Hotz in the Stiftskirche records (LDS film #1238276) who died March 26, 1694 at the age of 50 years. Possibly Philip's son.
Per Erich Langguth in a personal interview on Sept. 20th, 2002, Stiftskirche burials would have been made in the churchyard but no longer.
