Descendants of Alexander W. Douglass

Generation No. 1

1. ALEXANDER W.1 DOUGLASS was born Abt. 1755 in Scotland, or Lancaster Co, PA?1, and died Abt. 1789 in Madison Co, KY1. He married JANE MOORE Bef. 1779 in Lincoln Co, KY (later Madison Co)1, daughter of WILLIAM MOORE and MARGARET WRIGHT. She was born 1762 in Lancaster Co, PA2, and died 1830 in St. Louis Co, Missouri Territory, or Boone Co, MO?.

Notes for A
LEXANDER W. DOUGLASS:
William Glenn, Jane Moore Douglass's second husband, was a friend of Alexander Douglass. Perhaps Alexander came to Kentucky with William Glenn. According to the Yates family history records, Alexander was married in KY. However, Alexander was married before Kentucky was a state.

Witnesses to John Ogan's Grant Deed and betrothal to Mary (Polly) Douglass were as follows: William Douglass, John Ogan, Dudley Farris, James Douglass, Martin Douglass, and William Todd. Witnessed to by James McCormick and John Moore. The betrothal was consented to by William Glenn.

(Look for Alexander in Osage Co, NC)

The Glenn-Austin book says that Alexander Douglass received a Virginia Land Grant for 400 acres in 1780 in Lincoln Co., KY (Madison Co. was formed later from Lincoln Co.). This land was sold to Samuel Davis in 1787.

In a book "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to the USA," compiled and edited by Donald Whyte F.S.A. Scot., L.H.G.: DOUGLAS, Alexander, aged 52. From Perthshire, To Philadelphia, Pa., on 'Friendship," ex Leith, 9 May 1775. Laborer. (T.47/12) 1367.

This would put his birth about 1723 and age at death about 66, if this is our Alexander.

Alexander may have died in 1785. There is an estate record in Madison Co, KY, dated 1785, with names of children that match. I have not yet been able to get a copy of this record.

Notes for J
ANE MOORE:
Jane was one of the older children. There were Douglass families in Lancaster Co, PA, who probably came to Kentucky about the same time as the Moore's; there were Douglass families in KY in the 1790's.

Several children were born to Jane and Alexander Douglass. Their daughter, Jane, married William Todd on 12 Jan 1804. They had a son, James, who married his cousin, Betsey Burnsides, on 7 Jul 1808. Another daughter, Polly, married John Ogan on 8 Nov 1797. William Glenn signed the permission slips for them to get married and referred to them as his step-daughters. The Madison Co, KY tax records show that Jane Douglass paid taxes on May 11, 1790, so her husband Alexander Douglass died some time before that. She is referred to as Jane Glenn on 6 Nov 1792, in the court records when she, George Douglass, and John Snoddy asked that a certificate be granted to them for obtaining letters of administration on the estate of Alexander Douglass, deceased. There is no record of Jane's marriage to William Glenn, but they were married in the time between 11 May 1790 and 6 Nov 1792.

Jane married William Glenn about 1792, after the death of Alexander Douglass. Some sources say she died about 1808. Chet Ogan has William Glenn's death as ca 1830, Boone county, age 73. Alexander Walker Glenn was born in 1799, same year as Alexander Marion Ogan, so mother and daughter had sons both named ostensibly after the same person, Alexander Douglass, who were born the same year. Alexander Glenn and Alexander Ogan were very good friends. In fact, Alexander Glenn had planned to go to California with Alexander Ogan; but in the months before departure, Alexander Glenn broke his leg and ended up moving to Kansas instead a few years later. (information from Chet Ogan)

Melissa Fuller's chart shows Jane's death place as St. Louis, MO.
