Notes for W
ILLIAM HENRY DOUGLASS:
William Douglass is listed in Missouri Taxpayers 1819-1826, by Lois Stanley, George Wilson, and Maryhelen Wilson (Boone, Combined Land & Property, 1821 and 1825.) This is our William Douglass, since the Rev. William Douglass did not come to Boone County until 1827. Alexander Douglass is listed in the same publication as owning land in Boone County.

On page 737 of Switzler's History of Boone County, Missouri, appears a story about a young man who sickened and died three miles northwest of Columbia in 1820. There were no professional undertakers in the country and scanty means of making coffins. Having no planks to make a coffin, some of the neighbors agreed to cut down a large walnut tree, split it, and make two troughs to join together to serve as a coffin. The neighbors were Newberry Stockton, and William and Alexander Douglass.

According to Laura Wilhite Melloway, William's middle name was Henry. William was named as an heir in Margaret Laughlin's will; Margaret was his mother-in-law.

William and second wife, Fannie Hatton, moved from Boone County to Polk Co, MO some time between 1830 and 1840. They owned land in Township 34 (Marion), Range 23, Polk County, in 1844. (From History of Hickory, Polk, Cedar, Dade, and Barton Counties, Missouri, Chicago: The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889.) He died 23 January, 1849 and was buried in the old Bolivar City Cemetery. He died intestate.

William's grandson, William McCracken, says that William and his father (Wm. McCracken thought his grandfather's name was Alexander)) were born in Scotland. Census and other records state that William was born in Virginia. At the time he was born, Virginia included the present state of Kentucky. It is probable that William Douglass was born in what is now Kentucky. The birthplace of his father, Alexander W. Douglass, is said in the Glenn-Austin book to be Lancaster Co, PA, about 1755, but proof of that has not been found at this time (1998).

SABELLA LAUGHLIN:
Our knowledge of Isabella is limited. It has been established that she was the daughter of Margaret and Henry Laughlin. According to information in the LDS Ancestral File, unverified at this point, she was born in KY in 1779. Her husband, William Douglass, remarried in 1818, in St. Louis, so Isabella died before that date. She was married to William in Madison county, KY on 21 November, 1799, and moved to St. Louis county, Territory of Missouri, in 1810. It is possible that she died when her last daughter was born in 1815.

RANCES PHOEBE (FANNIE) HATTON:
Frances "Fannie" Hatton was born in South Carolina 26 January, 1788, the daughter of Reuben and Joan Beleau Hatton. Her mother was a descendant of a French Huegenot family. Reuben Hatton was born in 1762 of English parents in Amelia county, Virginia, one of the third generation after removal from England. He entered the American army at the age of nineteen. At the end of the Revolutionary War, he was in South Carolina. He was employed by Joan's father, and married the daughter. Reuben, wife and first three children joined one of the bands of emigrants piloted through the wilderness by Daniel Boone into Kentucky and settled on the Kentucky River, near what was later known as Foxtown, Madison county, KY. In 1814, the family moved to St. Louis county, Territory of Missouri, where Fannie was married to William Douglass on 20 January, 1818. That same year, William, Fannie, and his children from his first marriage moved to Boone county, settling near Midway, a few miles west of Columbia.

After William's death in 1849, Fannie remained in Polk county, until her death on 18 May, 1859. She was buried beside her husband in the Bolivar, MO City Cemetery.

Frances's obituary, Weekly Missouri Statesman, Friday, June 10, 1859:
"Deaths. In Polk county, Missouri, on the 17th ultimate, after a lingering illness, Mrs. FRANCES DOUGLASS, widow of the late William Douglass, formerly of this county, aged 72 years."

From Missouri Misc., Vol 13, "St. Louis Christian Advocate", pg. 59: 30 June 1859 - Douglass, Mrs. Frances, died in Polk Co in the 71st year of her age. Sister D was b in S.C, 26 Jan 1788. She removed with her parents, Reuben and Joanna Hattan, to the state of KY, thence to St. Louis, MO, where she was united in marriage to William Douglass; thence to Boone Co., where they lived many years; afterwards, to the vicinity of Bolivar, where she died in great peace, on 18 May, ult. It is gratifying to know that her children are all in the Church...their good mother has gone before them, to join her husband, and their father. -T F Ashby, Bolivar."

3. MARY "POLLY"2 DOUGLASS (ALEXANDER W.1) was born Abt. 1780 in Madison Co, KY26, and died Aft. 1838 in Probably Boone Co, MO27. She married JOHN OGAN 8 Nov 1797 in Madison Co, KY27, son of THOMAS OGAN and ANN ?. He was born 1773 in Of Rockingham Co, VA?27, and died Aft. 1837 in Probably Boone Co, MO27.

Notes for M
ARY "POLLY" DOUGLASS:
Mark Dillon has the dates 1765/1784 for the birth of Mary Douglass. Chet Ogan believes 1765 is too soon, would have made her 10 years older than John Ogan. 1784 would have made her 13 at her marriage to John. Her birth is more likely about 1777 to 1781, making her between 16 and 20 at her marriage in Nov 1797.

Witnesses for grant deed Feb 1811 from John Ogan to James McCormick (Susannah Glenn's husband) were William Douglass, James Douglass, and Martin Douglass. She is named in the 1838 Boone Co, MO will of Alexander Douglass as an heir; he also names as heirs William Douglass, James Douglass (both of Boone Co, MO), and Martin Douglass (of Gasconade Co, MO).
James Douglass went to Pettis Co, MO. Could Mary have remarried after John's death and this be why she doesn't show a death date? Or did Mary and John move from Boone Co, MO?

Notes for J
OHN OGAN:
No records of exact birth and death dates have been found for John. According to one census record, John and Polly both were born in VA (Kentucky was still a part of Virginia at that time). They were married in 1797 in Madison Co, KY.

Madison County, KY is home to the Boones. Boonesborough is about ten miles from Silver Creek. Kit Carson's parents lived on the next creek. Grant Deed on 25 Feb 1811 of property on Silver Creek, Madison Co, KY to James McCormick (husband of Susanna Glenn, Polly's cousin by marriage). For witnesses see wife's notes. Shortly after John Martin Ogan's birth in 1812, the family moved to St. Charles Co, MO where James Simeral Ogan was born in 1815. St. Charles Co, MO was a territorial county that included what is currently much of the northeast part of the state.

John served on petit jury and was a county road commissioner in Midway, Boone Co, MO in the 1820's. John patented 114 acres of land on T48N, R13, Section 18 at the Franklin Land Office on 10 Sep 1825. He died in Missouri after 1837.

Chet Ogan has heard from another family researcher that John Ogan sold his land to his son-in-law, James R. Wood, in 1837. So John and Polly died some time after 1837.
Possibly they were buried in Valley Springs cemetery, where James and Jane Wood were buried, plus many of their descendants. Many of the older stones have become unreadable, fallen over, and been discarded. My father, Lloyd Douglas, remembers stacking old tombstones under a tree near the cemetery many years ago, but they have disappeared. The plat of the cemetery has also disappeared, and to our knowledge there are no extant records, except county cemetery records done more recently.
