William Thomas Jewett McCracken writes: Anne Ballew Douglas, the oldest daughter of William and Fannie (Hatton) Douglass, and my mother, was born November 10, 1821 at Midway, Missouri. She died at Bolivar, Missouri March 30, 1893 and is buried beside her first husband, James McCracken, in the Bolivar cemetery. (We could not locate her stone; there's no record in the Polk County cemetery records.)

From the History of Hickory, Polk, Cedar, Dade, and Barton Counties, Missouri, Chicago: The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889: "Three brothers, James, Samuel and Robert McCracken, came in 1837; Samuel made his improvement on Section 26; Robert settled on Section 27, Township 36, Range 23..."

William Thomas Jewett McCracken writes: James, my father, was the fifth son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Holmes) McCracken. He was born in Williamson County, Tennessee September 28, 1815. He came to Missouri about the age of twenty-five, in 1840. He entered land both in Polk and Hickory Counties. He was twice married, his first wife being Intha Ann Kelley, daughter of George Kelley who lived on the old state road at the crossing of Dry Forks of the Pomme de Terre river, about ten miles from Bolivar, Missouri. She lived only about three weeks after their marriage. Father remained unmarried two or three years and then married, in 1845, Anne Ballew Douglas(s), born November 10, 1821 She was the daughter of William Douglas(s), born April 19, 1779, and Frances (Hatton) Douglas, born January 26, 1788. William lived five miles north of Bolivar, Polk County, Missouri on the old state road and kept a tavern known far and wide as "The Traveler's Rest." My father and my mother, (Anne Ballew Douglas) settled on a farm a quarter of a mile west of the Douglas farm. Here I was born June 8, 1847. My brother, Albert J., also was born on this farm April 17, 1849. Soon after this date Father and Mother moved to Bolivar. There my sister Intha Ann was born, December 19, 1850. My father was a carpenter and builder and worked at this trade in Bolivar. He built many houses, among them the old Academy at Bolivar, a large two story frame building which served the people there many years. In 1851 and '52 a severe epidemic of measles swept the community, causing the death of many people, among them my father, who died February 4, 1852, and my sister, whose death occurred April 3, 1852. This left my mother a widow with two small boys--my brother Albert, about three, and myself, a little over four. Grandmother Douglas took us to her home where we lived for about two years. My mother than married Asa Lee and went back to Bolivar where she remained most of the time until her death March 30, 1893. To my mother and Asa Lee were born two children, Robert Bird Lee, who resides in Bolivar, and Gabriella Lee Frazier, who married Henry Frazier and lives in Columbia, Missouri.

Joanna married John Holt of Illinois. They lived in Humansville, Missouri for several years. They moved to Mount Vernon, Lawrence County, Missouri, later to Bolivar, and then to Hartville, Missouri where they both died about 1893. They had two children-- Lucian, who died when young, and Zilla Frances, who married Richard Hanson and lives at Springfield, Missouri.

John Holt was a surveyor in Lawrence Co, MO from 1862 to 1868. The following quotes were found in one of his old surveyor's books: Don't steal this book for fear of shame for in it are many good men's name.
