Notes for WILFRED ARNETT: From information collected by Marmaduke Chapter, Columbia, Missouri: Wilfred Arnett: of Columbia, Missouri in 1923. Enlisted May 20, 1864 at Louisa Courthouse, VA in 1st Bat. Virginia Reserves, Co. C, under Col. R.T.W. Duke as private. Fought in battles at Ft. Harrison and Gains. Paroled out of service at Louisa Courthouse, VA in May 1865. Belonged to U.C.V. Camp Searcy under Capt. Maxwell. Received the Cross of Honor. Note: "I have not the language to write you of my experience of the cruel and bloody war that was fought in Virginia for four long years. We fought for a cause and principle that was just. The question of whether a Sovereign State had a right to withdraw from the Union has never been past on only settled by the sword. The Constitution of our country is blank on that question. I was only seventeen years old when I enlisted and did not suffer the hardships that my brothers had for four years of service. I was sent to the front at once on the Chickahomany River in front of General Grant's army. It was all we could do to repulse Grant's attacks; he would not drive; we forced him half around Richmond and Petersburg. With the most heartfelt gratitude to the noble Daughters of the Confederacy for their untiring efforts to commemorate and keep active the Cause we all loved so well, I am, as ever, Yours Gratefully, Wilfred Arnett." Wilfred stated that his mother was a slave owner in 1860, and his father was an officer in the War of 1812. Children: Elsie Arnett Hunt, deceased, of Midway, Boone Co., MO. Belle Arnett Quisenberry of Enid, OK. Archie D. Arnett, of Marysville, MO. Nettie Arnett Keene of Indianapolis, IN. Douglass F. Arnett of Greeley, CO. Eddie J. Arnett of Jefferson City, MO. |
