36. WILLIAM THOMAS JEWETT4 MCCRACKEN (ANNE BALLEW3 DOUGLASS, WILLIAM HENRY2, ALEXANDER W.1)244 was born 8 Jun 1847 in Bolivar, Polk Co, MO, and died 1934 in Humansville, MO. He married MARY AVA CHILDERS244 20 Sep 1866 in Quincy, MO. She was born 4 Feb 1849, and died Unknown.

Notes for W
ILLIAM THOMAS JEWETT MCCRACKEN:
William writes:

At the time of my mother's second marriage Grandmother Douglas desired that I remain with her, which I did until her death in 1858. After her death I lived with my guardian, Uncle Joseph Carroll McCracken, until I entered the Civil War.

On the first day of March, 1862, I enlisted in the Union Army. I was a stripling of a boy fourteen years and nine months of age. I was, however, unusually large and strong for one of that age, being five feet, eight and a half inches tall, weighing one hundred forty pounds, of fair complexion, brown eyes, with long yellow hair inclined to curl. I could ride like a Comanche Indian and was called "Cherokee" by all the boys of my company and regiment. I was the youngest man in the regiment, and a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 8th Regiment M. S. M. Cavalry. I served for three years in this company, my first captain being Benjamin D. Smith who resigned his office in August, 1862. Then William C. Human was made captain and served in that capacity till the end of our service in 1865, when we were all mustered out at St. Louis, Missouri about the first of March. During the last two years of service I served as orderly for our colonel, Joseph J. Gravely.

I stood the hardships of a soldier's life remarkably well for one of my years, doing the whole service of a man and a soldier. I was in many close places and was badly scared a number of times but did my duty as SI saw it, no matter how hard it was for me to face. I came out without a wound or mark of dishonor. It has seemed to me that a kind Providence must have taken special care of me, as I, like most younger soldiers, contracted some bad habits and became wild and reckless. But through all these exciting scenes of war and reckless associations I never forgot the early training of a good Christian mother.

After I was discharged I returned to the home of my guardian, Uncle Joe McCracken, in Polk County, Missouri. After a while I became lonesome for the comradeship of my soldier friends and the excitement of soldier life and thought seriously of going west where there were some rough times to be seen and had with the Indians. But my uncle Joe advised me to remain at home and improve a piece of land that belonged to me. Another thing that perhaps had more influence on my final decision to stay at home was a pretty girl, Mary Ava Childers, whom I had learned to love with all the ardor of a vigorous eighteen year old boy.

I stayed with my mother that fall and winter and in the spring of 1866 put in a crop on a farm near Bolivar. In the early part of that year I joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at Bolivar during a revival conducted by Rev. J. J. Bentley. On September 20, 1866, at Quincy, Mo., I was married to Mary Ava Childers, born February 4, 1849, who was a daughter of Dr. Josiah Childers and Anna (Shelton) Childers. We lived in Bolivar till the spring of 1867 when we went to Hickory County where I owned a tract of land that my father entered in 1840. We fenced and broke virgin prairie soil, built a house, and made our home.

During the summer of 1880 I was appointed census enumerator of Tyler township--my first official position. In the fall of that year I was elected sheriff of Hickory County and served two years in that capacity. In 1884 I was made Collector of revenue and held that position until March 1887. In 1889 I entered into the duties of register of the United States Land Office at Boonville, Mo. We moved to Warrensburg, Mo., in 1896 and remained there until the summer of 1903. At that time I became cashier of the Bank of Humansville at Humansville, Missouri, where we have since resided. I am, at the present time, vice-president of the Citizens State Bank of this place.
