1. JOHN³ WOOD (JAMES², JOHN¹) was born Abt. 1770 in Buncombe Co, NC, and died Aug 1824 in Boone Co, MO. He married ANN ? Abt. 1790 in NC?. She was born Abt. 1770 in VA, and died Aft. 1850 in Boone Co, MO.

On page 3: Wood(s), James vs. Ann Woods, Jonathan Woods, John Wood, Charles and Levina Kiggle (sp), John and Elizabeth McCoy, Elijah and Rachel Tate, David and Ann Bronegar (sp) and Harrison Jamison. (Jamison is guardian of Polly Wood(s)...Equal division must be made...public auction sale to be held at the house of Richard Gentry in the town of Columbia...Slaves to be sold are: Ben, Rhoda, Cubb, Maranda, Bill, Harriett and Caroline...Harrison Jamison to handle the sale, July 4, 1836...Sec: $5,000.00 bond.

John's administration (#40) dated 7 Oct, 1824, in Boone Co, MO, mentions the following heirs: Ann Wood, wife of deceased, James Wood, David Brinegar, Elijah Tate, Polly Wood of Boone Co, MO, John Wood of Cooper Co, MO; John McCoy of Lincoln Co, MO; William Wood of Buncom Co, NC; Jonathan Wood, Haywood, NC; and Charles Cagle of TN. Perhaps William and Jonathan were John's brothers? Son James was one of the administrators of the will.

On page 5: Jameson Harrison, guardian of Mary Wood, one of the heirs of John Wood, to set out the dower of Ann Wood(s), the widow of John. The said slaves, Ben and Rhoda, will be set out of estate, valued at $550.00, being one-third part.

On page 7: Adam Hesse and James Wood made annual settlement in the estate of John Wood.

On page 8: Wood, John...Slaves belonging to...Sale...

The Missouri Intelligencer, Franklin, November 20, 1824, page 3, column 4:

“NOTICE.
“The undersigned have taken out letters of administration on the estate of John Wood, deceased, late of the county of Boon, and state of Missouri--And all persons having claims against said estate are requested to exhibit the same within twelve months from the date of said letters, or they may be precluded from having any benefit of said estate; and if such claims are not exhibited within five years from the date of said letters, they will be forever barred.

“Mrs. Ann Wood, Jonathan Wood, John Wood, William Wood, Charles and Levina
Keggle, John and Elizabeth McCoy, Elijah and Rachel Tate, David and Ann Brinegar, and Harrison Jamison, guardian of Polly Wood.

      “TAKE NOTICE, that as an equal division cannot otherwise be had, I shall, at the next term of the Probate court of Boon county, Missouri, make application to said court for an order directing the sale of the slaves belonging to the estate of John Wood, deceased, to witt Ben, Rode, Caleb, Carline, Maranda, Bill and Harriet, and cause the money arising therefrom to be distributed according to the right of each person entitled to distribution, and according to the statute in such case made and provided. James Wood January 2, 1826 17 4 w”

IN THE CIRCUIT COURT
“JONATHAN WOOD, William Wood, John Wood, Charles Keggle and Levina Keggle--Take notice; that I have petitioned the Circuit Court of Boon County, state of Missouri, at the last February term, to have the North West quarter of Section No. 1, Township No. 43, Range No. 13, containing one hundred and sixty acres, sold as the land belonging to the estate of JOHN WOOD, deceased, and have the proceeds of the sale divided amongst the heirs of the said estate, according to the rights of the respective heirs,

(In this same issue, the deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams are announced; both of them died on July 4, 1826.)

I have not found a burial record for John Wood or his wife Ann. Ann was possibly buried at Valley Springs Cemetery, as she was living with James R.’s widow prior to her death, and both James R., his wife, and other relatives were buried at Valley Springs.

In 1850, Ann, age 80, widow, was living in the household of her daughter-in-law, Jane Ogan Wood, widow of James R. Wood. The household also contained James I., Andrew J., Rachel C., Martha J. (my great, great grandmother), Eliza F., America, and John W. Wood, Jane's children, as well as James R., Jane's grandson and John W.'s son. John was widowed, and later married Teresa Harris.

"Served in the War of 1812 in the Regular Army. He was discharged in 1817
He received a land grant in Missouri for this service. I presume this is where
he was living when he came to TX .He appears in tax lists in the early 1820's in Mo.. There is a family in Callaway county Mo. who had a son named Elijah Tate, however he is said to have died in Kentucky.
Our Elijah came to TX in FEB of 1829 and was gone or had died by 1850. He was a member
of Green DeWitt's colony which was formed primary in Mo. He may have had a family in Mo I found a will for a Wood's who names daughter Rachel and her husband Elijah Tate. She remarried in 1833 and our Elijah married in 1835. Needs more investigation."
