I am researching the sur names of (Huff,Leg,Legg,Bush)paternal side and for the Maternal side the names are as follows(Patterson,Burton,Mullins, and more)I will add more as I find them.I am just starting out with "genealogy"I so far find it very interesting but I know very little and I would be very grateful for any input or advice or assistance that anyone would like to offer a rookie like myself. The surnames I have listed are all from the south-west Virginia (Big Stone Gap,Keokee,Appalachia area scott county wise county,Lee county)And in the East Tennessee area Knoxville,Lake City,Coal Creek,LaFallotte Anderson and Campbell counties. My research on the surname Huff goes back to late 1700's with a James and Obedience Huff I know he was a Doctor and sat on the Virginia Legislature as was the tradition of his family,But I cant get any further with the parents of James if anyone might know how or where I might find any more information Please contact me!
Well time has passed since I wrote this and on some of the aforementioned names I have made a little headway but mostly the same brick wall is still in front of me with just as many bricks. I did take a trip to Big Stone Gap and I did find the grave sites of many of the ancesters I am searching. Also I feel the need to say that up in them thar mountains was some of the most beautiful country I think I have ever seen, I now know why some of them got there and stayed and never left it is absolutly beautiful up there. I have come to the conclusion that the MULLINS line I am searching is NOT Irish like I had been told all my life I have heard "IRISH","BLACK DUTCH" Well I am of the conclusion that Yes we are Melungeon,I can feel my ancesters rolling over in their graves at me expressing this out loud in broad daylight as I am sure that they spent most of their thinking adult hood trying to hide this fact. Its a shame that they didnt feel they could be proud of what they were and are.I know I am but it is easy for me to say I am proud as I am not having to go through the trials and turmoils they did just because of their ancestry.I hope they can rest in peace now that their descendants are proud of the Heritage they had to hide.
