The Hughes Family TreeUpdated April 20, 2012 | This home page is devoted primarily to the HUGHES family, which according to the research I have done so far, originated in England in Worchester County, and immigrated to Canada about 1859. HUGHES - My patriarch is Thomas HUGHES, whom I believe was born in or around the town of Redditch, Worchester County, England, in April, 1795.Thomas' son, Nathaniel, and his pregnant wife, Elizabeth (Eliza) BANNING, along with their 3 children, George Thomas, Mary Ann, and John Albert, left England and arrived in New York about 1860.The mother, Eliza, died shortly after going to Canada from New York, leaving the young children to be raised by Nathaniel. They eventually settled near the small rural agricultural town of Appin, (Ekfrid Township), Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada, where many of the descendants of the family are still located today.I am the great great great grandson of Thomas and the great grandson of John Albert HUGHES. DONALDSON. Another line that I am actively pursuing at this time is the DONALDSON family that settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in or around the town of Allenport. The DONALDSON family has a very strong connection to the HUGHES family, which is not fully understood at this time. The patriarch, as I currenly know him to be, is John DONALDSON, who was born in Perthshire, Scotland, in 1800.He arrived with his brother, John, and two sisters, in Canada about 1824.He and his brother migrated to Pennsylvania, and became U.S. citizens, while the two sisters married and stayed in Canada, settling in the Ontario area.John married a local girl, Mary Ann, whose last name I do not know as yet. QUATER - The Quater patriarch is Boruch QUATER, whom I believe was from Kiev, Ukraine (formerly the Soviet Union). The name is thought to be derived from the Jewish name "KVATER," one who carries the male infant into the circumcision ceremony.Circa 1850-60 - The Russian Czar decreed that all Jews would take surnames. Most took the names of their occupations. Thus - QUATER (KVATER). Other examples: A Bris is a circumcision ceremony - BRISMAN; SILVERSMITH - Self explanatory; MILLER - Flour grinder, etc. (Source: Shimeon Brisman, Judaic Bibliographer, UCLA Research Library). Boruch was born about 1830 and died in Kiev, Ukraine, about 1882. He was a tailor by trade, as were his two sons, Hyman and Louis. His widow, Malkah (Mollie) GOLDBERG (yes, it's really Mollie Goldberg!) and their five children, Sadie, Mary, Hyman, Florence, and Louis, immigrated to the United States about 1882. There is an indication that the family lived in New Texas (which is now part of Pittsburgh), Plum Township, Pennsylvania, for a brief period of time. Both sons had children born there in 1883. Hyman and Louis married two sisters which makes their children slightly closer than first cousins from a bloodline standpoint. The two families were very close and even lived under the same roof for a considerable period of time there and where they eventually settled in Chicago, Illinois. From there, the QUATER family has spread to many states, although not many with that name still exist. The boy child, Max Joseph QUATER, born to Louis QUATER and Dora HYDOVITCH, in New Texas, Pennsylvania, in 1883, is my maternal grandfather. |
