This Web page represents what is known about James Hughes, his wives, Nancy Willoughby and Margaret Satterfield and their descendants. While I am not certain of their origins family lore tells us that James was born at sea during his mother's trip from Ireland to Baltimore. She, Elizabeth Hughes, left Ireland alone in November of 1769 and disembarked at Baltimore in Feb 1770 with infant son, James. The story continues that James was indentured as an infant to the Willoughby family who raised him on their farm somewhere on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He married their daughter, Nancy, thus starting our family line.
There are no known records of their marriage, where they lived in Maryland, or where they were buried. I have no information about the Willoughbys although it is a well known name on the Eastern shore.
James and Nancy had ten children most of whose descendants I know little about. Their 4th child, Samuel, born in 1797, lived in Caroline county, Maryland, had twelve children and is the common ancestor of most of the Hughes' still living in Western Kent County, Delaware and Caroline County, MD.
