A MAKLEY FAMILY TRADITION
George Makley came to the city of Dayton, OH in 1832.Settling in the Franklin Street neighborhood with his seven children, George set out to make a new and better life for himself and his family.
Born Johann (yo-hawn) Georg (gay-org) Moglich on the 12th day of January 1798 to Franz Josef and Anna Maria (Seger) Moglich in the town of Stadelhofen, Baden, Germany, George was trained at an early age in the proud handiwork of the German blacksmith.His family was members of the Catholic Church in Ulm.George was married on 25 February 1811 to Maria Julianna Walz and they had eight children before Maria's death on 3 December 1830.
It appears that life for George was full of tragedy starting on that December day in 1830.His mother died in August 1831 and was followed by his father's death in January 1832.Next he would lose his 14-year-old daughter, Ludovica (Maria Louise), in July 1832.
Dayton, in 1832, was the new beginning for George and the rest of his family.His sons, Joseph Anton (born 6 August 1820, age 12), Franz Karl (born 10 January 1823, age 9), George (born 17 July 1827, age 5) along with their sisters, Eleonora (born 30 January 1813, age 19), Franziska (born 10 March 1815, age 17), Julianna (born 18 February 1825, age 7), and Barbara (born 12 January 1830, age 2) would find prosperity in the new country.
Religion being a very important aspect of every day life for these German immigrants, the founding of a church was a high priority.The Franklin Street community that George and his family of seven chose to make their home was made up of primarily German speaking people.At first, masses were held in nearby homes when a traveling priest was in town.In 1837, Emmanuel Catholic Church was built on Franklin Street thanks to the efforts of Father Emanuel Thienpont was also appointed Emmanuel's first pastor.George Makley and his family were among the first parishioners of Emmanuel Church (the first Catholic Church in Dayton).George took up residence at the corner of Franklin and Prairie (now Perry) in 1853 and stayed there until his death in 1859.His sons, Josef Anton and Franz Karl also owned lots on Franklin Street across from Emmanuel Church (where Chaminade High School now stands) around 1860.
It wasn't long after their arrival in Dayton that their names became Americanized.Josef Anton was known as Anthony, Franz Karl became Charles, and Johan Georg was then known as George.Their last name also changed.It is found spelled many ways, such as Moglich, Moeglich, and Meglich.The most common spelling found in early records (and the one that stuck) was Makley.
A few years after their arrival in America, George remarried Abalonia Smith and together they had one more child, who they named Mary A.
The Makley family stayed in the Dayton area and Anthony Makley can be found listed in an 1875 atlas as a farrier working at 86 S. Jefferson St.There were two children who left to start their new life outside of Dayton.Barbara and George Makley (Johan's two youngest) left Dayton for the Auglaize County community of St. Marys, OH.Barbara married a George Wise.George Wise was instrumental in the founding of the first Catholic Church in St. Marys and Barbara moved with him to St. Marys.George Wise was also a blacksmith and George Makley went with his sister and brother-in-law to St. Marys to work as an apprentice in the blacksmith shop that George Wise started.Here he learned his trade as his father had in Germany.
George Makley lived with his sister and brother-in-law for a time and can be found listed with them in the 1850 census.
In the book "Homecoming Week July 1-7 1907" there is mentioned the St. Marys Brass Band that was organized in the winter of 1856.It also listed the members as follows: Anderson Hunter, Richard Gibson, George Moeglich, Samuel Hoffman, Francis Miller, and William Kimpel.William Kimpel was leader of the band.
George then married Caroline Martz (daughter of George and Elizabeth (Backup) Martz) and started his own blacksmith shop, which was located on West Spring Street in St. Marys.He also started what would become a very large family.George and Caroline raised four daughters and eleven sons as follows: Caroline, Mary, Barbara, Catherine, Edward, George A., Albert, Thomas, John, Fred, Charles, Joseph, Andrew, Louis, and Henry.George lived to be 77 years old.He died in February 1904.Caroline lived to the age of 97, long enough to see many of her great-grandchildren born.
George A. Makley was born to George and Caroline on 2 August 1855.George A. was an adventuresome individual who, along with a friend, set out on horseback to travel west.Clarence (Snuffy) Makley (a grandson) remembers tales told to him by George A.He tells of hiding from Indians that they had spotted in the distance.The only cover they had was bushes.George stated that those bushes were shaking, but there was no wind.George lost his rifle in the Little Big Horn River while trying to cross.For a while, George ran a blacksmith shop in Cheyenne, WY around the time of Custer's last stand and it was told by George that he had the body of Custer's brother in his shop for days after the battle.
It was while he was out west that George A. Makley would meet and marry Elmina Unthank.On 1 July 1879, they were married in Colorado.Elmina was the daughter of Mordecai and Eliza Jane (Stanley) Unthank and was born in Chester, IA 15 September 1858.When George married Elmina, they returned to St. Marys where George set up a carriage and blacksmith shop located at the corner of South and Front Streets.They then began their family.Losing two children to illness at an early age, George and Elmina would raise four boys to maturity.Herbert (born 23 June 1884) married Dora Koehn.William F. (born 21 September 1884) married Kathryn Wilmes.Arthur F. (born 21 September 1886) married Hulda Gershner.Frederick (born 11 July 1889) married Antoinette Fellows.Pearl Anthony (born 12 April 1893) died (unknown).Mary Lorreta was born on 5 February 1897 and died at the age of 2 months on 12 April 1897.
George A. Makley's carriage shop was well known in Auglaize County as supplying reliable metal and farrier work as well as turning out some fine carriages.A description of his business can be found in the "Homecoming Book" that was published in 1907 on businesses in St. Marys.Also found in this book is a photo of his father's blacksmith shop.
William Francis Makley was born to George and Elmina on 23 June 1884.George A. would retire in 1911 and turn his blacksmith shop over to William and his brother Herbert.William would marry Katheryn Wilmes (daughter of Jacob and Julie (Huffman) Wilmes).They raised a family of seven (five boys and two girls): Clarence (born 17 July 1914), George (born 16 November 1912), William (born 17 July 1914), Wilma (born 22 May 1917), Carl (born 24 August 1920), Rosemary (born 21 October 1922), and Andrew (born 6 October 1924).
Clarence can remember helping both his father William and his grandfather George A. in the shop on Front and South Streets when he was just a boy.He was given the job of putting nuts on the wheels of the carriages and other odd jobs around the shop.Clarence also remembers standing outside the shop with his grandfather, watching the first automobiles travel the streets of St. Marys.George A. Makley stated, "They will never replace the horse."
In the early 1930s, the Depression hit and money became scarce.William lost the blacksmith shop to a local bank that called the loan of $2,300 that he could not pay.They also lost the home of George A. Makley at 419 S. Main St. (George died on 25 October 1931) and almost lost the home at 428 S. Main which was William's.
It was around this time (1931-1932) that Clarence helped his father start the shop alongside the family home at 428 S. Main.The shop grew and became William Makley and Sons Welding.All the boys in the family worked in the shop as soon as they were old enough and some were gone only long enough to serve their country during World War II.The Makley welding shop would continue until it was sold in 1989.
Clarence, Carl, and Andrew would all retire at the same time, letting the shop go, even though it was probably the hardest decision they ever had to make.Clarence has even started doing odd welding jobs in the garage beside the house, which just happens to stand at the exact place the old shop first stood in 1931.Clarence is now 79 years old and still flying his airplane.I don't think he will ever slow down.At least, I hope he doesn't.

A priest in Stadelhofen wrote that the parish records on Georg show that he was born 2 Jan 1789.The records also indicate that he and his family immigrated to the US in 1832.
