Nottingham Archdeaconry Court Will
Robert Dafte, snr yeo, Hickling, made 19 September 1634, proved 26 February 1634/5.
Robert Dafte made his mark and the will was witnessed by John Collington (who signed) and George Dafte at bridge and George Dafte at dovecoate (who made their mark). The mark of George at bridge was a "+" and George at dovecoate an "A".
In the name of god amen the nineteenth day of September in the year of our lord 1634 I Robert Dafte the elder of Hickling in the County of Nottingham, yeoman, being of whole mind and in good and perfect remembrance praised be to almighty god for [same?] do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following. First I give and commend my soul unto almighty god my only maker and redeemer and my body to be buried in the (pish = parish?) church churchyard (stet) of Hickling aforesaid. And as touching my lands and tenements I do dispose of them as follows. First my will and mind is that all such debts and debts as I owe of right or conscience to any (pson = person?) or (psons = persons) whatsoever be well and truly paid and contented by mine executors hereafter named out of my whole estate. And after my debt and my funeral expense discharged I will that all my goods, chattels and (debts - in this context amounts owing?) shall be divided into three equal (ptes = parts?) whereof I will that Elizabeth my wife shall have one third (pte = part?) to her own [personal?] use and (beheaf = behalf?).
My will and mind is that Richard Dafte my eldest son shall have all such lands, goods and tenements peaceably and quietly in such manner and form as heretofore I gave (conveide = conveyed?) and bestowed upon him the same being a competent and sufficient (pfermente = preferment?) for him out of my estate. I give and bequeath to Dorothie and Elizabeth my daughters to (ether = either?) of them six pounds thirteen shillings and four pence a piece to be paid unto them by mine executors within twelve months next after my decease. I give and bequeath to Thomas Dafte my youngest son ten pounds to be put forth to the best use for him by the discretion of mine executors within twelve months next after my decease and to be paid unto him when he shall accomplish the age of one and twenty years. Moreover, my will and mind is and I further give and bequeath unto Dorothie and Elizabeth Dafte my daughters each of them other six pounds thirteen shillings and four pence a piece. And also to Thomas Dafte my son other ten pounds to be paid unto them three children within six months next after the decease of Elizabeth my wife by mine executors, their heirs, executors or assignees.
I give and bequeath to Richard Dafte my eldest son 12d in full satisfaction and discharge of all [there?] filial part and portions of all my goods.
I give and bequeath unto all my god children 12d a piece. All the rest of my goods, chattels and debt after my debt paid my funeral expense discharged and all those my legacies [contemed?] in this my (psente = present?) will fulfilled I wholly give and bequeath unto my two sons George Dafte and William Dafte equally to divided (betwixt = between?) them. Also my will and mind is that the benefit and (pfott = profit?) of all such my lands and tenements [ ] after my wife have taken forth her )pte = part?) shall equally divided between my said two sons George Dafte and William Dafte during the life of Elizabeth my wife and after her decease my will and mind is and by this my (psente = present?) will I give and bequeath unto the said George Dafte my second son one half (pte = part?) of Thornell Close with one half (pte = part?) of my two oxgang of land and half the house newly erected and being in the close called and known by the name of fflagpoole and half the barns, stables [stockyards?], (backfides = backfields?) there to belonging to him and his heirs for ever. I give and bequeath to William Dafte my third son the other half of (pte = part?) of Thornell Close and half of my two oxgang of land and the other half part of the now erected house in fflagpoole aforesaid and half the barns, stables, [stockyards?], (backfides = backfields?) thereunto belonging to him and his heirs for ever. And I do hereby make, constitute and fully ordain Elizabeth my wife and George Dafte and William Dafte my sons executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills heretofore made whatsoever by me the said Robert Dafte in witness whereof I have hereunto this my (psente = present?) will set and put my hand and seal the day and year first above written.
