I, Oneida Merritt Hughes, am the seventh daughter of James Thomas "Tom" Merritt and Florence Ellen Johnson.Sylvester Murphy Hughes and I married on June 5, 1953, three days after I graduated from Louisville Academy in Louisville, Georgia. We have six wonderful children, two boys and four girls. I worked for the University of Florida Information Systems Department, formerly known as Administrative Computing Services, for more than 33 years and retired October 26, 2000. I am looking for information on my grandparents, James "Jim" M. Merritt and Frances "Fannie" Penelope Osborne.I do not know Jim's middle name.Jim lived in Bibb County before moving to a country home near Warthen in Washington County, Georgia. I am also looking for information on my grandparents, James "Jim" Monroe Johnson and Martha "Annie" Matilda Johnston. They lived in Washington County, Georgia.Annie was Jim Johnson's second wife. Please contact me if you have information on either family.Anything you contribute may link to additional information.I would like very much to know their parents names and where they were from originally. Select the links below for more information and pictures.

- Sylvester & Oneida, 1953 (63 KB)
Spring of 1953, the year I graduated from high school and married. - Maternal Grandmother Annie Johnson (78 KB)
This picture was scanned from a very large, old and torn group picture that had grandma's name listed on the back as one of the group. As far as I know this is the only picture of her. There are links to the full picture after it was cleaned up and also a handdrawn picture of grandma taken from this picture. - Paternal Grandparents Fannie & Jim Merritt (50 KB)
James M. Merritt and Frances Penelope Osborne Merritt on the back steps of their home near Warthen, Georgia. The house has been slightly renovated and is not far from Hamburg State Park. - My parents: Ellen & Tom Merritt (50 KB)
This picture was taken about 1951.We lived in the two-story house in the background. It had a wide hallway down the center with double doors at the front and back leading onto porches. The kitchen was off the back of the house before it burned, but was rebuilt on the side. The house has been torn down and the lumber reused. There was an old family cemetery with a wrought iron fence and wonderful old headstones not far from the house. - Maternal Grandfather Jim Johnson (49 KB)
This picture was contributed by my cousin, Lavin Johnson Mason, and is the only picture that I've seen of my grandpa. - Tom & Ellen Merritt's Daughters (123 KB)
This picture was taken at our family reunion in 1994, the last year Bert was with us.Beginningwith the front row on the left of your screen are:Ruby, Alma Ree and Annie Bert. The back row beginning on the left are:Mary Agnes, Christine, Ellene, Oneida, Lois, Billie Janice and Fannie Clyde. - Maternal Grandmother Annie Johnson, pencil drawing (108 KB)
This picture is a pencil drawing by Grandma Annie's great-grandson,Eric Johnson and contributed by her granddaughter, Levin Johnson Mason. It was copied from a group picture that belonged to my oldest sister. The original picture was being discarded after my sister passed away.Another sister saw my grandmother's name on the back and rescued it.See the scanned original. - Ellen, Grandma Annie Johnson and Macon (33 KB)
I cleaned up this picture as best I could. The picture from which it was scanned was in very bad condition. The names were on the back of the picture, although there is some family concern that the picture is not of the persons whose names are listed on the back.
