Notes for HARDEMAN "HARDY" CREWS: "The following is a transcript of information on the Hubbard's, Crews and Doochees who lived in the adjacent counties of Person Co, NC and Mecklenburg Co., Va obtained from the Friends Historical Collection at Hege Library, Guilford College, Greensboro, NC. There is no indication when this was written or by whom, but parts must have been written by children of the people described, as the details are too exact. Other parts must have been written after the Trail of Tears because of the reference to "applying for Cherokee nation membership rights". Other parts are certainly written as late as 1920 because of the reference to 150 yrs of connections between the Hubbard's and Meredith's. No attempt has been made to edit or change the original text. Kevin Cosand Patton, January 1999. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GENEALOGY OF THE HUBBARD FAMILY WITH A BRIEF HISTORY OF ITS CONNECTION WITH THE CHEROKEE INDIANS According to the best information to be had in regard to the ancestors of the Hubbard family as obtained from records, history, traditions and aged persons, about the year 1740 there dwelt near the banks of the Keehukee Creek in the British province of North Carolina a Cherokee Indian by the white name of Goochee, but in the Cherokee language as Doochee. [Kehukee Swamp rises in eastern Halifax Co. and flows SW into Roanoke River. Appears as Kehukee Creek on the Collet Map, 1770. Source: Powell, Wm S. "The North Carolina Gazetteer." 1968, pp.261-76] In the year 1729 North and South Carolina were made separate and distinct provinces. The original Cherokee Indians, however, were the almost sole occupants of all the central and a greater part of the Eastern portions of the North Carolina Province. Soon the Whites, who had gained a foothold on the Eastern coast of North Carolina began to penetrate these hitherto sacred hunting grounds of the Indians. Among these adventurous pioneers was a white man, an Irishman, named Hardy Crews, hardy he was by name and hardy by nature. In what is now known as Person County he halted and permanently located. Finding very few white settlers, and especially of the female sex, he chose for a life companion a beautiful Cherokee maiden, a dark-haired daughter of the Doochees. A generous welcome seems to have been extended to this happy couple by the Indians. In due course of time two daughters were born to them named Ann and Mary Crews. These English names as well as an English education were ! bestowed upon these promising children. Ann Crews, having grown to womanhood, her mind enlightened and cultured with such an education as that frontier life and early period would allow, was tall, graceful and slender; features regular and beautiful; in manners gentle and modest, quiet and unassuming, yet in disposition and character firm and very determined in purpose. While attending school in Mecklenburg County, she formed an acquaintance of a young white man, Joseph Hubbard, a sedate Quaker. That acquaintance ripened into an affection that resulted in their marriage about the year 1770. Thus it is clearly seen by the marriage of the full blood Cherokee Doochee mother to the white man, Hardy Crews, and the subsequent marriage of the half blood daughter Ann Crews to Joseph Hubbard, another White man, that by the faithful observance of the sacred marriage obligations which bound these devoted women solemnly to their devoted husbands, lost them and their descendents to their! identity as members of the Cherokee Nation of people, but not their rights as such when properly applied for. Not much is known of Joseph Hubbard's ancestors. The best information is, they were English Quakers who came over to this country in 1681 with William Penn when the settlement was made in Philadelphia and from there they emigrated to and settled in the County of Mecklenburg, Virginia, and in the adjoining counties of North Carolina. Dr. Benjamin Franklin in his autobiography gives a concise account of the colony of Pennsylvania [sic:Pennsylvanians] who emigrated to Virginia and North Carolina in 1729, and among other things he had to say in regard thereto, speaks particularly of the Meredith's, one of whom married Mary Crews. He mentions Hugh Merideth, who was his partner for some time in the printing business in the City of Philadelphia. It seems that the Hubbard's and Meredith's have been in close connection for over one hundred and fifty years and that their Indian blood runs back to the same Cherokee stock of starting point the Doochees. Joseph Hubbard was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and after his marriage to Ann Crews still lived there, where several of his children were born. He afterwards moved over into Person County, North Carolina, where he lived until after the death of his first wife in 1812, he then moved to Guilford County, North Carolina. Joseph Hubbard and Ann Crews had eight children, viz. Hardy; Jeremiah; Joseph; Woodson; Jacob; Ann; Susana and Rhoda. After his removal to Guilford County, he married a white woman named, Axsah [Achsah] Coffin by whom he had two sons, viz., John R. and Samuel N. Hubbard. He lived to be upwards of ninety years old, died and was buried in the graveyard at New Garden Meeting House, North Carolina. The five Hubbard boys were noted for their large size, fine personal appearance, none of them being less than six feet tall. They were generally known as the "Big Cherokee Boys". They were trained by their Quaker parents to practice the principles of peace and friendship, but woe to the boy or man who with sneers and insults taunted them with their 'Cherokee blood'. Of all the brothers, Jeremiah was the best known and portrayed in his features and general appearance his Indian descent. He was tall, erect and straight as an arrow, being six feet two or three inches in height. He had a dark swarthy complexion, keen black eyes, high cheek bones, hair straight and black as coal, a large mouth with firm lips and his front teeth were long and slightly curved inward. He was a distinguished and influential minister in the Society of Friends of Quakers. He was a fluent and eloquent speaker and a natural born orator. His voice was strong and musical and he seemed to sway his hearers at will. He was generous, unselfish and hospitable and his 'Red Brothers', the Cherokees, as they traveled through his section, which they often did, always made a stopping place at his plain and unpretentious home hailing him as a friend and brother and claiming him as one of their own people. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Following notes provided by; Henry Hanson, College Station, TX. He married Phoebe Goochee before 1775. On 9/18/1779, Hardy Crews bought 91 acres of land in Caswell Co., N.C. for 90 pounds in Virginia currency from a Michael Dickson/Dickins, ref. John Paines line. A grant deed was recorded on 10/13/1783 to Hardy Crews for 525 acres in Caswell Co., N.C. on Mill Creek. On 2/18/1790, Thomas Clayton of Caswell Co., N.C. sells 200 acres on Richland Spring Creek to Hardy Crews, ref. John Paines old line. Then on 8/6/1790 in Caswell Co., N.C. and indenture was made between Thomas Clayton and a Robert Dickins, Hardy Crews, Jurat. This land was located on Deep Creek of Flat River. When Person Co., N.C. was created from Caswell, Hardy Crews and Thomas Clayton became citizens of Person Co., N.C.. Of their known children, our Lawrence Co., TN. ancestor, Benjamin Crews was born about 1775 in Caswell Co., N.C.. He married Mary Clayton, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Coleman Clayton, * sister of William "Flat River" Clayton 2/2/1796 in Person Co., N.C.. They had Sarah 12/1796, Arthur Simeon "Arter" 1799, William 4/1800, Benjamin, Jr. 1802, Elizabeth 1803, Johnathan 1804, Rebecca 1806, and Thomas abt. 1808. Mary Clayton Crews died 1810 in Person Co., N.C. and is buried in the Roxboro area. After Mary's death, Benjamin Crews married on 10/8/1811 Guilford Co., N.C. to Mary Rose. Benjamin and Mary Rose Crews had Hardy 1811, Obediah 1813, Mary Ann 1814, Thomas 1815, Sidney 1817, Martha "Patsy" 1818, and Zacharias 1820. Mary Rose died in Lawrence Co., TN.. The "Crews and Clayton Clan" came to Lawrence Co., TN. before 1830, as they are listed in the 1830 census records. Many of the family members soon married here in Lawrence Co., and lived in the 7th district, in the now Mt. Lebanon area, near Spring, Knob and Brushy Creeks. Benjamin Crews, Sr. died 1841 Lawrence Co., TN. and is thought to have been buried in the Crews Cemetery #1. ( * I took this to mean Mary and William are sister and brother.) More About HARDEMAN "HARDY" CREWS: Nationality: Probably Irish (from text in "Notes" section) Religion: Quaker Notes for PHOEBE DOOCHEE/GOOCHEE: As mentioned therein I like to refer to the Goochee family name as Doochee as per what the earliest source story indicates was the more accurate Cherokee pronunciation. However there has to be speculation about the source of the name. Refer to my attachments. One of my photocopy documents from Hege library for instance refers to, "Phebe Goochee (AKA Dutch)". We could speculate that there was an extended family relationship between the Crews, the Hubbards, and the Goochee/Doochees. It's entirely possible that more than one Goochee/Doochee family member married into the Hubbard family. We do know that the tribal people couldn't mix with the Hubbard family, Re: Jeremiah, Hardy's older brother: "...the Cherokees, as they travelled through his section, which they often did, always made a stopping place at his plain and unpretentious home hailing him as a friend and brother and claiming him as one of their own people." We could speculate as well that the Goochee/Doochees were actually a subtribe of the Cherokee that had taken on the descriptor "Dutch" to distinguish themselves from other subgroups. As long as we remember what is speculation and what is fact, we'll be fine. The problem is that there is already a lot of misinformation out there, expecially in the Crews family records, as there were Crews people who were trying to prove membership in the Eastern Cherokee nation in order to get land rights. As my postings state again and again, I've seen nothing to indicate that Hardy Crews and Phoebe Goochee/Doochee had any male offspring. So the Crews family can't link themselves back to our Phoebe Crews. Notes for JEREMIAH HUBBARD: "3297 Jeremiah Hubbard, Rejected. Claims through Phoebe Crews. Report following: Report as to application of Jeremiah Hubbard #3297, and other applicants claiming through Phoebe Goochee, or Dutch, wife of Hardy Crews, and her daughters Ann Crews, wife of Joseph Hubbard, and Mary Crews wife of Hugh Meredith. More than one hundred applications have been filed based exclusively upon the alleged Cherokee Indian blood of Phoebe Goochee, or Dutch, wife of Hardy Crews. It appears from the applications and from the papers filed in the case, that Phoebe Crews lived in Person County, North Carolina, and died there prior to 1800. The date of her birth cannot be exactly stated, but her daughter Mary was born in 1752. Her daughters Ann and Mary both died in 1812, and Mary Crews Meredith, dying in 1823. Their descendants have been considerably scattered, apparently some going to Guilford County, N.C., and afterwards removing to Indiana, and from their to Indian Territory or Oklahoma. Mary Crews Meredith apparently lived a part of the time in Bedford County, Virginia, as her son John was born there in 1779. Person, Stokes and Guilford counties, North Carolina, were never within the recognized domain of the Cherokee nation, and there were not Cherokee lands anywhere near those counties after the year 1777. In 1835 the Cherokee domain did not extend within 200 miles of these counties. There is nothin in the case to indicate that any of these claimants, or their ancestors back to Phoebe Crews, have lived with any tribe of Indians after the marriage of the said Phoebe to her white husband Hardy Crews. One of the descendants of Ann Crews Hubbard, Caroline Newby Painter (a great-grand-daughter) was born in Indiana as early as 1833(see application #41017), and one of the descendants of Mary Crews Meredith (a great-grand-daughter), Ann E. Starbuck, was born in Wayne County, Indiana, in 1829, (see application #42866). According to all the information at hand, and the testimony taken in the case, (see Misc. Test. Pages 2285 and 3175), these claimants have always been recognized as white people and have not lived among the Indians except as they have in recent years lived among the Cherokees of Oklahoma where some members of the family have made strenuous effort to be recognized and enrolled as Cherokee Indians. These efforts have uniformly failed. One of these claimants, Florence A. Mason, herself 22 years of age, files application #41041, and she is the great-great-great-great-great-grand-daughter of the Indian ancestor, Phoebe Dutch Crews, and she is still living in Indiana. From some of the statements in the case it does appear that Jeremiah Hubbard, the son of Ann Crews Hubbard, had some dealings with the Cherokee People about the time of the treaty of 1835, and it seems probably that he was used either as an interpreter or as an attorney in presenting the claims of the Cherokees in Washington, but the fact also seems to be that he was picked up by the Cherokee delegation on its way to Washington, as he at that time lived a very long distance from the Cherokee reservation. No one of these claimants was enrolled in 1851, not does the name of any one of the parents appear on that roll, or on the roll of 1835. The family was well-known and there is no possibility that they could have been enrolled under Indian names. It is perfectly plain from the applications and the papers filed therewith that neither these parties, nor their ancestors, were recognized members of the Eastern Cherokee tribe of Indians in 1835-6 or 1846. These claims are therefore all rejected." Here is what I have on the Crews who married into the Hubbard Quakers of North Carolina: Re: Ancestors of Jeremiah Hubbard missionary Posted by: Kevin C. My Sarah Hubbard's father was Hardy Hubbard, b.23 Dec 1777 at Mecklenberg Co., Va; (his older brother was Jeremiah,b.18 Feb, 1777) Hardy married Polly (Mary) Wright on 2 Aug, 1798 in Person Co., NC; moved to Hancock Co., Indiana aft.1809. Hardy's f. was Joseph Hubbard (English Quaker ancestors arrived in 1681 with W.Penn) Joseph was b.18 Oct 1751 in Mecklenberg Co., Va.; m. Anna Crews in 1770; d. 17 Aug, 1832 in Guilford Co., NC. Anna Crews was b.1747 among her mother's people, the Cherokee of Kehukee Creek which is near Scotland Neck, Halifax Co., on the Roanoke River; d. in 1812 in Person Co., NC. Anna's parents were Hardy Crews of Ireland and Phoebe Doochee (Cherokee pronunciation) or Goochee (white man's pron.) Phoebe was full-blooded Cherokee and her family came from Kehukee Creek. Doochee was either her father's name or an associated clan. I've researched the name with Cherokee linguists to no avail. A famous Cherokee chief of the 1800's had a similar name derived from the word for German immigrants referred to as "Deutsch." 10. ii. HARDY HUBBARD, b. Dec 23, 1777, Mecklenburg Co., Va.; d. Each person who owned property or paid poll tax is listed. The acreage, amounts paid in tax, or districts are not listed on the original. Many of the names were very hard to read, and I am sure we probably made some mistakes, but we did the best we could considering the writing. We tried to verify names using other sources whenever possible. If there is a question mark beside a name, that means we are unsure of the spelling. The number following each name is the order in which they appear on the list. This will enable us to locate a particular person whose name you want copied, since the original list is not in alphabetical order. The father immigrated to Lawrence County, Tenn., on Christmas Eve, 1831, and died in that county 1862, his wife dying March of 1882. Our subject was reared in Lawrence County, and had few opportunities for gaining an education, but in later years has gained a good business education. He begun the battle of life for himself after attaining his majority, and engaged in farming and stock raising, being very successful in the latter occupation. He owns about 1,800 acres of land, about 700 of which is under fence. On the 25th of September, 1844, he was married to Mary Virginia Hensley, daughter of Simeon and Charity (Bryant) Hensley. The father died and Mrs. Crews was quite young, and his widow married a Mr. Taylor and moved from Lawrence County, since which time nothing has been heard as to her whereabouts. To our subject and his wife were born the following family: William James, born May 18, 1847, and died in July, 1865: Arter Simeon, born May 1, 1849. Mrs. Crews died June 3, 1849, and June 3, 1859, Mr. Crews married Eliza Emeline Helton, and their children are Melvina Catherine, born July 20, 1861: George Washington , born May 29, 1863: Zachariah F., born June 20, 1866: Jeremiah Benjamin, born August 11, 1869; Louvisa Amanda, born July 11, 1871, and died September, 1882; Jonas, born September 27, 1873; Jonathan McClane, born August 11, 1876; Henry Clay, born May 29, 1879; and Daniel Wewbster born October 15, 1881. Mr. Crews was not in the late war. In 1852 he was elected justice of the peace, and served six years. In 1882 he was re-elected of the same office. He was formerly a member of the Methodist Church, and still retains his religious views. Notes for RICHARD CLAYTON: Richard was working in 1850 as a collier, making charcoal, almost certainly at the Kelly Forge near where the Clayton's settled in Lawrence County, by 1860. A forge needed charcoal to produce the heat necessary to bring iron to a white red color, where it could be struck into metal objects used during those times. The hammer and anvil of the forge were probably driven by a large water wheel. Colliers were paid by the bushel for charcoal they delivered to the forge. They would cut several cords of wood and stack it in a large pile, with a center pole in the middle, where the fire would be introduced and cover the pile of wood with dirt to control the burn. After the burn, the coals had to be separated and hot spots extinguished. Wagon loads of charcoal were often rekindled on the trip to the forge. If the Collier was not an experienced artisian, the fire could rekindle, the load could be burned, and also the wagon. Richard was enumerated on the 31th of October 1850 in Lawrence County, Tennessee pp. 367. The forge ceased to operate and Richard returned to farming according to the census records. Richard died between 1860 & 1870 possibly in the Civil War. Richard Clayton and Elizabeth Gillespie: Marriage: 01 October 1839, Lawrence Cty. TN. Notes for JONAS ARTHUR CREWS: Lawrence County Goodspeed's History of Tennessee... Crew, Jonas, who was born on the 22nd of September, 1821, in Person County, N.C., is a son of Arthur and Louvisa (Hicks ) Crews, both of whom were born in the same State and county as our subject, in 1799 and 1801, respectively. Crews married Eliza Emeline Helton, and their children are Melvina Catherine, born July 20, 1861: George Washington , born May 29, 1863: Zachariah F., born June 20, 1866: Jeremiah Benjamin, born August 11, 1869; Louvisa Amanda, born July 11, 1871, and died September, 1882; Jonas, born September 27, 1873; Jonathan McClane, born August 11, 1876; Henry Clay, born May 29, 1879; and Daniel Webster born October 15, 1881. Mr. Crews was not in the late war. In 1852 he was elected justice of the peace, and served six years. In 1882 he was re-elected of the same office. He was formerly a member of the Methodist Church, and still retains his religious views. Each person who owned property or paid poll tax is listed. The number following the name is the district where the individual owned property. The actual book shows acreage, value of land, number of polls, and amount of tax paid. He was originally buried in the Buchanan/Crews family cemetery, but was moved in the late 1950's. After the death of Jonas and Eliza's youngest son, Daniel Webster Crews, in the 1920's, the farm where the Buchanan/Crews cemetery was located was sold to Ollie North. In the late 1950's, he had workers remove the iron fence that surrounded it, removed some headstones and incorporated some of the land into the surrounding cotton field. When one of my uncles discovered what had been done, he got a court order to move the remains of Jonas, Eliza, Zachariah, Amanda, Henry Clay, 2 unnamed children, and Eliza's mother to Pleasant Grove Cemetery. He also moved the Buchanans whose graves could still be identified. Unfortunately, some of the gravestones had been so badly damaged that they were illegible. Jonas's middle initial and year of birth are incorrect on his new stone, which was made after his reinterment. The name of his daughter Amanda Louisa is also incorrect on her new stone. I just found out recently that the farm where the Buchanan/Crews cemetery was located was named "Pine Grove." My father and his brothers always referred to it as "the old home place." I grew up on an adjoining farm. As you probably know, the house was badly damaged by a tornado in the 1930's and never fully restored. The remnants have now been completely destroyed by a gravel mining operation.
