Notes for Albert Franklin Hughes:
He had red hair and was known as Frank Hughes. Both Frank and his brother, Joe, were frequently teased by the other boys because they had red hair. Frank would usually ignore the teasing but Joe frequently lost his temper and would fight. When he was a small boy, he moved with his family to Bolivar, Missouri, and attended the public schools, graduating from Bolivar High School at the head of his class of six students in 1893. His son, Harry, and his grandson, Thomas, were also valedictorians from the same high school. After attending Southwest Baptist College, he taught in the public schools of the county, being a leader both as a student and teacher. He married Alice Edna Wollard Aug. 23, 1896. He ceremony was performed by Rev. Bates in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Madison Wollard in Aldrich, Missouri. The marriage license was purchased in Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri. In addition to his work as a teacher, he began to buy land and to engage in farming and stock-raising at which he was equally successful, owning some of the very best farms in county at the time of his death. In 1912, he was nominated on the Democratic ticket for judge of the county court of the western district of Polk County, Missouri. This district had always been strongly Republican, but owing to his kind and genial disposition and his great ability to make friends, he was elected by a large majority, a feat that but one other Democrat, his father, Abner Benton Hughes, had been able to accomplish. Later his son, Jimmie Franklin Hughes also accomplished the same feat. He gave his work as judge the same careful consideration he gave to all his businesses and made one of the best judges Polk County ever had. In 1913, he moved to Aldrich, Missouri, and became a partner in the Jones and Hughes Hardware Company. He continued as a successful businessman until 1923 when he devoted his entire time to farming. He was a longtime member of the Christian Church and a popular teacher in the Sunday School of the Aldrich Christian Church. He was not only a teacher, a farmer and a businessman, but he was an all-round community man. He served on the school board and much of the progress of the Aldrich Public Schools was due to his help and inspiration to all he met in all walks of life. He took seriously ill while serving as foreman of the grand jury at Bolivar and following surgery for a ruptured appendix, he died Feb. 6, 1926, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Missouri.
He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Bolivar, Missouri.
