Adam Rankin born circa January 3, 1791 in Lexington,Kentucky moved his family to Maury County, Tennessee by 1824. His wife Sarah Harrison was also born in Kentucky, in about 1800. They already had children when they moved to Tennessee. Children born in Tennessee include Martha, circa 1827, Theopholus, born in Maury County Jan 21, 1828, James A. born circa 1830, Mary, circa 1833, Olivia, circa 1835, Patent H. born August 20, 1837.
Adam moved his family to Mississippi in 1838. His last child, Josephine S.E. was born circa 1843 in Mississippi.
In 1850, he was listed in Chickasaw County. In 1860, Adam was not listed, but, his wife and family were. Many of the children had left home already. Theopholus had married, had two children and his wife had died during childbirth with a third child. Theopholus was then living with his mother, and sister, Josephine, and his two young children, Josophelia and Robert.
Sarah was no longer on the census records by 1870. The last date I find information for her was 1864, when she is listed as guardian to children; Richard,Cora, and Tempsy Lucas. Theopholus continued to live in Calhoun County until his death on February 28, 1912. Many of the children of Adam and Theopholus lived in the surrounding counties.
Theopholus' children include: (first wife Rebecca Hunter Kirkwood) Josephilia Rebecca "Ophelia", November 14, 1856; James Robert, circa 1858; (second wife, Medora E. Roberts)Joe Marcellos Rankin, born in Sarepta December 22, 1864; Ananiah, circa 1868; Mary E., cira 1870; Theodocia, October 6, 1873, Mertillar E., circa 1876; (third wife, Mary Tedford) Lenora "Nora" Feb. 2, 1886; Cora, circa 1888.
Joe M. married Emma Lewelling/Lewellyn in December 1891. They lived in Calhoun County, presumably close to his father on the 1900 census record for Calhoun County. Her parents were Rev. George Washington Lewelling/Lewellyn and Catherine Lucinda Salmon. The Rev. was a circuit preacher for the Methodist.
Joe M. moved to Lafayette County by 1910, and to East Texas by 1920. Joe moved to Wills Point, Texas by the 1920's and lived there until the time of his death in 1950. Joe and Emma died withing one week of each other at the old Rankin home place.
