07/25/07 Update:
We now have 43 members in our FTDNA Humphrey project, the latest a member of the National Genographic Society with 12-marker DNA results, in the R1b1 haplogroup.
Recent searches in Dorset have yielded records of relationships, possibly genetic, with Humphry families in Honiton, Devon, some of whom reflect an earlier surname, Hue(s). We are currently researching the possibilities that Michael Humphrey, 1577, Honiton, was of a former Hues family. There were many Humphrey, alias Hues, families in the Honiton area, well into the 19th century.
In this search of Lyme Regis, Dorset Parish & Court records, and in proximate areas, we found further evidence of Michael Humphrey having 2 marriages: first to Susanna(h) (Ann), with daughter Sarah, b. 1608, buried 1609, and sons Michael & Samuel, both of whom died in their teenage years. We have burial but no birth records of these 2 sons. Michael was married a 2nd time, 1615, Bridport, to Martha Pride, had 7 children including son Michael, 1620, my ancestor, and Samuel, 1631, who was a business partner of Michael, and later moved to St. Malo, Brittany, France, where he was buried.
For many years we were puzzled by some apparent inconsistencies, once of which is of a son Michael, buried in June 1620, and a son Michael christened Sept 10, 1620. This now makes sense in the context of 2 marriages. We're still searching for the birth records of sons Michael & Samuel of the 1st marriage. **********************************
We're looking for Hue(s) families for DNA testing, especially any who may be in the Honiton, Devon area, or men who have ancestors from the area - also seeking Humphrey men in that area, and more generally, southern England.
See http://humphreygenealogy.com and our FTDNA Humphrey project pages for more information.
UPDATE: The GEDCOM file, Humphrey.040507.GED, descendants of Michael Humphrey, 1620, Lyme Regis, Dorset. We were fortunate to find a 9th cousin, and a Y-chromsome DNA test verified the paternity of my ancestor Ozias Jr., son of Ozias Sr. of Simsbury, CT, born 1763. A major objective in our genealogical research has been satisfied. Also we have over 700 descendents of Jonas Humphrey of Weymouth, Mass., who immigrated there, late 1630's. We are seeking all Humphrey descendants, particularly those of Michael & Jonas, & their ancestry.
This early success with DNA testing established the paternity of Ozias Humphrey, born 1789 in Simsbury, CT., & identified Humphrey family lineages in America & Europe, & delineated Celtic & Scandinavian lines. *DNA testing can knock down some traditional brick walls in genealogy.* See: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=A89830&special=true ======================================================================
We're currently investigating the possibility that our Humphrey family of Lyme Regis, Dorset, & Honiton, Devon of the 16th and early 17th century may have immigrated to England from Northern France in the preceding century. Michael Humphrey of Lyme Regis came to Connecticut, ~1640. His parents were Michael Humphrey, born 1577 in Honiton, Devon, England, & Martha Pride, of Bridport, Dorset. Both towns are very close to Lyme Regis. They were married July 4, 1615, in Bridport, Dorset. Recently we discovered Bishop's transcripts of Lyme Regis church records, courtesy LDS, resolving conflicting records from different sources: LDS IGI, RootsWeb, WFT, and other publications. A 1648 letter to Michael in Simsbury, Ct, apparently from his mother, Susannah, and Samuel, his father or younger brother, is actually from his father & mother, Michael & Martha Pride, and the signatures of Samuel & Susannah are from a PostScript on the back of the envelope. Many errors about our Michael's parents have propagated from the 1884 book, "Humphreys in America", in which a copy of this letter is published with the PostScript signatures of Samuel & Susannah juxtaposed as the original si
