LANGE V. RIVIERE
Mr. Lange V. Riviere, the oldest merchant of Thibodaux, died almost suddenly last Saturday, the 5th at 3:15 P.M.He had been ailing for several days previous, but there existed no apprehension that dissolution was so near at hand; but the scriptural words, "Amid life is death," were again verified. On the day he died he was apparently feeling much better and had taken a good hearty dinner. While carrying a pitcher of water to his bath tub at about 3o'clock, he swooned and fell down to the floor of his room unconscious. He was at once taken from the floor, and placed in his bed by the loving members of his family. He revived a few minutes afterwards and was able to speak a few words to his family,He then felt a choking sensation, and soon afterwards breathed his last. The last words he uttered were: "Send for the priest"; but it was too late; before the priest could come he had breathed his last. The death of this most estimable gentleman was a terrible shock to our community.
The funeral took place on last Sunday evening at the St. Joseph Catholic Church at 4 o'clock, in the presence of a very large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives.Rev. Father Chastel officiating, and his remains were laid to rest in the family tomb adjoining St. Joseph's Church.
Mr. Riviere was one of the most widely known gentlemen in this parish, and his death leaves a void in the family circle that will not soon be forgotten. In our next issue we will give a biographical sketch of Mr. Riviere as space prevents us from doing so in this issue.
