14. Joe Tom Davis, Legendary Texians, Vol. IV, (Eakin Press, c. 1989), 181, On the morning of 16 Aug 1889 "twenty-six Jaybirds grabbed their Winchesters & poured out of the Brahma Bull & Red Hot Br. Led by Volney Gibson & saloon owner Hery H. "Red Hot" Frost, the armed Jaybirds slowly marched the three blocks down Morton Street to the old courthouse. After the sheriff told him to stay out of the showdown, Sergeant Aten and his Rangers made a fruitless effort to hold back the Jabird mob before Ira said, "Save yourself, Boys, this isn't our fight." Just then, leaders Garvey and Frost met face-to-face in front of the courthouse and fired at point-blank range; the sheriff fell dead at a hitching post, with seven bullets in him, while Frost was left mortally wounded with a gaping hole in his stomach. The Jaybirds on the open street then opened fire on the outnumbered Woodpeckers hiding in the courthouse. In twenty minutes, several hundred volleys were fired by about 35 well armed men. Amazingly, there were only four dead and an unknown number wounded in the Battle of Richmond." The next morning found Richmond under martial law.
