Notes for E
LLA VIOLA HUNDLEY:
OCTOBER 28, 1879
The anniversary of the first day on which my father and mother made camp on the homestead, on the South Beaver Creek, comes on Tuesday of next week.
I will write a few lines in memory of those Early Days of Rawlins Co.; as this October is sixty-two years since my parents came and with them a few of the 'Real Old Time Pioneers.'
In the party were Alex and Maggie Bird; Mr. and Mrs. James K. Bliss; Ben Bliss; Nellie Bill Balding; John A. Bliss; Estella Bliss Hill; and George M. Bliss; William Clendinning, wife and three children.
Mr. and Mrs. John Bliss and John's mother, Sarah A. Bliss, had made a home on the South Beaver where the William Latimer place now is, in June 1879. (ed. note - This is most likely Ella and John.)
Those were the only Homesteaders Southwest of Atwood at this date.
In March 1880, Andrew McDougal and George McDougal, settle in the neighborhood and ??????? group of settlers were near the Old Homestead of the Birds. There were several other neighborhoods of 1879 and 1880 throughout the county.
There were many hard years, many disappointments, but their faith in God and their love for their children and their homes, kept all contented and happy.
Father and Mother loved God's great out of doors and they knew the signs of the stars and planets; the call of the wild birds and animals. And together we worked to make a happy home. All who came were welcome, the neighbors of those far gone years, are nearly all gone.
The memories of the Pioneer Friends are my greatest heritage.

Hello Dorothy, I really enjoyed chatting with you. The file came thru fine (ed. note - I sent her a genealogy report). It will take me days to go thru it all. I am glancing through my files and I have the original marriage license for Alta Leota Bliss and Jacob F. Huffman. They were married on March 25, 1893 in Atwood, Kansas. Ella Stark and Levi C, Stark were their witnesses. On the back of it written in pencil is:
Golda Huffman was born Dec. 19, 1897 and died March 19, 1898
Alta Leota Huffman was born Jan. 8, 1877 and Died Dec. 21, 1897. I also have the original marriage license for Frank and Flossa Huffman. I will make copies and send them to you via snail mail. If this is alright with you. Also Flossa's death certificate, obit. and Frank Vinzant's obit too. They are my Great Grandparents. I have the legal papers for Flossa's father's estate. Copies of course. But can make duplicates if you like. I don't know how much of my tree you want. I have my mother's side into with my fathers. The file has over 1000 names. I will try and separate it and send you his side only. I will do what I can. I work 6 days a week so it may take me a few days. But I will get it too you. I am not real good with the computer. SO I still use the Mail service allot. Hope to hear from you soon. If my memory serves me correct......... Ella left Levi for a work hand. They were later married and Levi never remarried. (ed. note - I believe Ella left John for Levi, "a work hand.") I will check my records to be sure. But I think that is right. Let me know how much you want. I have a tendency to over do it when it comes to my familytree. hehehehehe
take care. Linda Lee Vinzant Cain.

William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas was first published in 1883 by A. T. Andreas, Chicago, IL. and lists a John A. Bliss as County Surveyor in 1883. I don't know if this is John Allen Bliss or his uncle, John A. Bliss.
"The Bliss and McDougal families with three covered wagons, came to Rawlins County, in 1879. They brought 30 head of cattle. The little settlement then consisted of the Jim, Ben and John Bliss families, the Andrew McDougal family, the Alex Bird family and George McDougal. Mike Bird told that all gathered for Christmas at Alex and Maggie Bird's, joined by some of those who had lost loved ones in the cold of 1878." (an excerpt from a news article sent by Betty Berndt, 12/26/00)
12/29/1876 - Fire at home of John Bliss 7 miles north of Manchester during a dance there. Flames were quickly extinguished.
12/24/1877 - John Bliss driving few miles north of town was thrown from his carriage when his team of colts ran away. He was seriously injured.
5/17/1878 - Participated in a trap shoot in Manchester
11/1/1894 - It was reported from Greeley that John Bliss and Elishe DeLackeney (early residents of Elk township) died from the effect of burns received on a farm in Nebraska. No particulars were given.

EVI CHRISTOPHER STARK:
The 1885 Kansas census shows Levi born in Ohio.

The Portland City Directory
in 1905 - no listing
in 1906 - Levy C Stark, 498 E 30th
in 1907-08 - Levy C Stark, rpr SP shops, 498 E 30th
in 1909 - Levi C Stark, carp, 498 E 29th
in 1910 - Levi C Stark, car bldr, SP shops, 309 Glenn
in 1914 - Levi and Ella Stark, 309 Glenn
in 1916 - Levi & Ella Stark, hlpr, SP co.
According to Mr. Evans at the Portland School District Records Management office the 1915 Polk City Directory lists Levi Stark as a car (railroad) repairer. Mr. Evans guessed that he worked at the Albina yard in Portland. The City Directory lists their address as 309 Glenn which is now 1609 SE 32nd St. Place.

Levi's death certificate states that he had lived in Oregon for 14 years and 11 months and at 309 Glenn Ave for 9 years and 11 months at the time of his death which means he/they moved to Oregon in June 1901.
His death notice in the May 20, 1916 Oregonian states that P.L. Lerch undertaking parlors on East Eleventh and Clay streets took care of the remains.

Hi, Dot,
Thanks for the clarification. I look forward to seeing the info after you have sorted through it. Time consuming, isn't it?
I found some information I wanted to share with you about Levi that I found last night in my grandmothers stuff. There are apparently 2 stories about his death. Vinzant Family History (1985) states that Levi was called to work for the railroad late one night. When he attempted to climb on the moving train he slipped and fell under, where he was run over.
Next to that story my grandmother wrote the following Levi was working under a train on the brakes. The engineer did not know Levi was there and started the train moving. The wheels cut off both legs
and he died from the injuries. Ella received a settlement of $80,000. When she died her estate went to her granddaughter, Flossy Huffman Vinzant (my great grandmother). Flossy received about $2,000.00. My Grandma Clora wrote that this story was told to her directly from her great grandmother (Ella).
I don't know which is true, but both shed some light on the story. $80,000 would be a large sum of money in those days and would explain how Ella lived so many years after the death of her husband.
Have a great week. Bob
