FAMILY HISTORY OF JUANITA BAIRD COATES
by Juanita Coates

My father, Frank Vernon Baird, was born in Scio, Ohio on July 29, 1876 to William Baird and Margretta Ryan. Their children were Frank Vernon and Edgar Howard, and a daughter, Mary who died soon after birth. Both of their parents died within a month or so, when the boys were eleven and nine, so they were raised by relatives.

Howard went to his mother's sister and her husband, Aunt Becky and Uncle Lou (I do not know their last name), and he was happy in a loving, caring home.

Frank was not so fortunate. His father's sister and her husband, Nancy and Webster, took him, reluctantly, and there was no love or kindness. His childhood and growing up were an unhappy and painful process. He received small inheritance when he came of age at twenty-one, and he left Ohio, never to contact those relatives again.

His first job was in a mortuary in Denver, for a very short time. Then he went to San Francisco where he found work as a coal stoker on a ship carrying immigrant laborers to Hawaii, for two trips. After that he worked at Sherman and Clay Piano House, which was much more to his liking. He attended a Presbyterian Academy and became a bookkeeper.

He met my mother in 1903 when he went to live at my grandmother's rooming and boarding house. Emma had graduated from San Francisco State Normal School, and she was living at home while teaching school.

They soon fell in love and a couple of years later were married on December 16, 1905. She was twenty-four and he was twenty-nine when they became man and wife and established their home in Berkeley, California. Dad was working for Pacific Gas and Electric Company in San Francisco, and he commuted by key route train and ferry boat.

Letter from Juanita to Dorothy Hosking, 27 July 1999
"Frank Vernon Baird was raised by Nancy (his father's sister) and her husband. Dad spoke of Webster, but I don't know if that was his first or last name. Dad always said that Aunt Nancy had a son who was a spoiled brat. I think he was younger than Frank. There were no other children ever mentioned.

Your grandfather, Edgar Howard Baird, was raised by Aunt Becky and Uncle Lou. They were dear people. She was his mother's sister. I do not remember their last name, but I do remember them coming to visit us when I was quite small. I don't remember whether it was in Berkeley or after we moved to Santa Rosa in 1913.
