Notes for William W. Ball III: [Hargrove-2.FTW]
Migration was in April 1635, Wiltshire, England, to America inthe ship Planter. William of Lincoln's Inn (in Middlesex, nearLondon, England) apparently rates this title because he lived inLincoln's Inn, not that he was born there. He signed theHarleian Society's Herald's "Visitation of London", 1633-5 forhis Ball family ancestors and siblings. He was one of fourattorneys in The Office of Pleas in the Exchequer Court. Webelieve he is our immigrant ancestor coming to and settling inSt. Mary's Parish, Lancaster County, Virginia. A William Ballarrived in America on the English ship Planter about April, 1635with six sons - Alling, Francis, John, Samuel, Richard, andWilliam according to "The Name And Family Of Ball", age 21) andaffirmed by a genealogist with the Institute of AmericanGenealogy of Chicago. We have found by a "preponderance of theevidence' that William of Lincoln's Inn had the six sons Alling,Francis, John, Samuel and Richard and William (William ofMillenbeck)! Some sources state incorrectly that William ofLincoln's Inn was also married to Dorothy Tuttle. Our majorityof sources dispute this and record Dorothy married to William'sson Alling Sr. Our only mystery is information that William ofMillenbeck arrived in America ca 1650. It's possible hereturned to England after arriving with his father in 1635,married Hannah, fathered his children and then returned toAmerica - if all his children were born in England. William ofMillenbeck, married Hannah Atherold, settled in LancasterCounty, Virginia and was the great-grandfather of GeorgeWashington. Genealogist cannot confirm or deny William ofLincoln's Inn's son Richard, brother of William of Millenbeck,great-grandfather of George Washington, is the Richard Ballconfirmed as our ancestor. However, we believe our Richard isthe brother of William of Millenbeck considering this additionalinformation: Arthur J Ball, a documented descendant of RichardBall's son John (W. W. Hoskins): "John Ball of Lee County,Virginia ....., (page 35, #193 Arthur J.) stated 'our handeddown history is we are related to George Washington, I thinkabout a fifth cousin.' Arthur J. Ball was born only forty sevenyears after George Washington's death and his grandfather,Revolutionary War Soldier, John Ball, was a contemporary ofGeorge Washington. Arthur's documented statement, within thetime frame of the statement, is very believable.
