First Generation ---------------------------------------- 1. Unknown BURKE. Born ca 1810 in unknown. The parents of William G. Burke still remain unknown. I have found 'Burkes' already in Pa. as early as the 1700's.We know for certain that they were in America by 1828 because that's the birthdate of William G. This is what was going on just prior to William G. Burke's birth. The Erie Canal had just been completed in 1824. There were only 24 states. In 1825 John Quincy Adams was elected president. Unknown married Unknown. Born ca 1810 in unknown. They had one child: 2 i. William G. (1828-1878) Second Generation ---------------------------------------- 2. William G. BURKE. Born in 1828. William G. died in Shickshinny, PA. in 1878-1879, he was 50. Buried in Pine Hill, Shickshinny, Pa. Occupation: Boatman. Served in 52nd regiment (CO.A) of the Pa. Volunteers-infantry division. I have a copy of a diary describing their travels; conditions and Battles. I also have William's discharge papers(copy) and some muster rolls. I found William G. Burke age 22 in the 1850 Luzerne Co. Census , Salem Twp. He was living with Issac Titus and family and was working as a laborer. When William was born, Andrew Jackson was elected president. William lived during the terms of the following presidents, Martin Van Buren,William Henry Harrison, John Tyler,James Polk,Zachary Taylor, Franklin Pierce,James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes. William was 6 when Cyrus Mc Cormick patented the reaper (1834) and 9 years old when John Deere introduced the steel plow in 1837. The 1830's saw the beginning of the first commercial railroads. William was 8 years old in 1836 when Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie died at the Alamo. Uncle Tom's Cabin was written in 1852 when William was 24. William was 31 when John Brown led the raid at Harpers Ferry and set off the Civil War. William lived during a time of much change in the country. What did he think when he saw the first steel plow ,the sewing machine that was invented in 1846 or heard rumors about the California Gold Rush of 1849. What were his thoughts on Oct.9,1861 when he enlisted into the 52nd Regiment of the Pa. Volunteers or on the march to Camp Curtin, Harrisburg. William listed his occupation as a boatman. What was he hearing on the canals and waterways in the mid 1800's. This is just the beginning of the story of William G. Burke. I will be adding to this sillouette of his life from time to time as I explore his world and the circumstances that 172 years later has produced well over 200 Burke descendants. ca 1869 when William G. was 41, he married Susannah (susan) HENDERSHOT, daughter of David HENDERSHOT & Nancy. Born in 1842 in Warren Co., NJ. Susannah (susan) died in Shickshinny, PA. ca 1919, she was 77. They had the following children: i. William G.. Born ? . William G. died ? . Aunt Thelma said that there was also a William G. Burke who was Frank Burke's brother. I am taking her word on this, since I can not find any other information so far. He died as a child. 3 ii. Frank died in Shickshinny, PA. on Jan 31, 1955, he was 84. Buried in Pine Hill, Shickshinny, Pa. Occupation: Coal Miner worked for West End Coal Co., Shickshinny. He drove the mule team out of the mine. My Mom said that Pop had to go to work at 8 years old ;when his Dad(William) died. On Apr 30, 1891 when Frank was 20, he married Sarah Jane (Eartwine) HUFFMAN, daughter of Charles P. HUFFMAN & Mary Jane VANDERGRIFT, in Shickshinny,Pa. Born on May 31, 1875 in Oxford,NJ. Sarah Jane (Eartwine) died in Elizabeth,Pa. on Mar 2, 1955, she was 79. They had the following children: 7 i. William F. (1892-1961) ii. Ellen Elizebeth. Born on Dec 22, 1894 in Shickshinny, PA. Ross Twps. Ellen Elizebeth died in Elizabeth,Pa. on Oct 14, 1968, she was 73. Buried on Oct 17, 1968 in Round Hill Cemetery. They had no children but people used to drop off their unwanted cats Although she wouldn't allow them in her house, she used to have milk delivered for them. At that time her milk bill was 19$ a week-in the 1950's. Aunt Libby was a wonderful cook...I do believe we have some of her recipes. Will check on that later. Ellen Elizebeth married Peter GAUBLOMME. Born in 1899. Peter died in 1970, he was 71. iii. Charles L.(Todd). Born on Apr 14, 1896 in Shickshinny, PA. Charles L.(Todd) died on Oct 18, 1918, he was 22. Uncle Todd died at 22 years old while in the U.S. Army. He didnt die from the war..he died from being so homesick..he had never been away from home before. iv. Samuel. Born on May 17, 1898 in Shickshinny, PA. Samuel died in 1905, he was 6. Hid behind the couch after he drank wood alcohol and died. v. Neda. Born on Sep 29, 1900 in Shickshinny, PA. Ross Twps.? Neda died on Jul 30, 1942, she was 41. Neda and William had 9 children. Neda married William HILL. 8 vi. Helen (1906-1957) 9 vii. Elmer Leroy (Jake) (1908-1939) 10 viii. Sarah was always known as Aunt Sally. Sarah ' Sally ' married Irvin ANDREWS. They had one child: i. Alice. 5. Ellen BURKE. Ellen married Sonny SWANK. They had the following children: i. Sue. Known as Aunt Sues. She married Alex Mowery. ii. John. iii. Nita. Married a Miller. iv. Tom. 6. Charles BURKE. Born on Jul 24, 1876. Charles died in Shickshinny, PA. on Sep 9, 1956, he was 80. Buried in Pine Hill, Shickshinny, Pa. Uncle Charlie was in the Spanish-American War. He also played the accordion. Charles married Margret BLACKBURN. They had the following children: i. William. ii. Buried on Mar 18, 1961 in Round Hill Cemetery. Occupation: Security guard for steel mill near Pittsburgh. Lived on Blaine Hill in Elizabeth,Pa. Recently received an e-mail from his daughter Peggy Burke Wall. Married 38 years to a retired fire-fighter for Allegheny Co. Airport Division . I vaguely remember meeting Uncle Bill at my Aunt Libbys house. Peggy has 3 children: Debbie,Maxwell and John Grandchildren: 19 Great-Grandchildren:2 William F. married Anne SUPERNOVICH. On Sep 10, 1927 when Sarah Catherine was 17, she married Edward Jonas HUNTINGTON, in Shickshinny,Pa. Born on Nov 26, 1902 in Lime Ridge,Pa.
