Section Two: States that the Murphree family originally came from Dublin, Ireland. One Daniel Murphree, who died in Ireland in 1782, and his wife, Sarah Dempsey, had twelve children, seven of these sons migrated to America before the Revolutionary War. They were Solomon, Nimrod, David, Daniel II, Mills, William and James. Solomon (1752-1848) came in his old age to Blount Co., AL; Nimrod settled in MO; David went to TX; Daniel was killed in the Revolutionary War but some of his children came to Blount Co., AL; Mills settled in GA; William migrated to TN; and James remained in NC. The Will shows that the land that he left to Solomon and Moses was in Granville's office, and he was hoping to save at least part of it when the office opened again. Revolution came along and his property was confiscated. All the holders of the land who did not have clear titles lost..." "Because of the fact that most of the early deeds in Orange Co. were destroyed, it is not determined just how early Daniel Murphree came to that county. His name is not on the 1755 poll tax list and he was there in 1762. He probably came about 1760/61. Settlers came to Orange Co., NC from the western part of NC and from many other states. The tenth day of November in the year of our Lord 1769, I Daniel MURPHREE, of the County of Orange, Planter, being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God. Therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament, that is to say, Principally and First of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it, and for my body I recommend it to earth to be buried in a christian like and descent manner at the discretion of my Executors, nothing doubting, but at the general Resurrection, I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God, and as touching such Worldly Estate therewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form: First and Foremost, I lend to my well beloved wife, Sarah MURPHREE, the Plantation whereupon I now live and all my household goods and chattles after all my just debts is paid and some legesses hereafter mentioned. When the British won the battle and sought the Murphys for conviction, they hastened to America and changed the name to "Murphree" and "Murfree". L. Murphree, age 25, and a Emily Murphree, age 20. There is also a Mary Murphree, age 85, born in NC, and G. C. Ellis, age 28 (son of Jesse Ellis and Hannah Murphree) a school teacher living there. A Marker was placed in Bynum Cemetery, Blount Co., AL. The Murphree Quarterly, June 1969, page 112, Sept 1971, page 29 (Pickins from Pickins) by Mrs. Frank H. (Mary) Taylor. Solomon was born about 1757 in NC. He was in the 1790 Pendleton Census with one son and five daughters and his wife. In 1797 and 1798 Solomon was a messenger to the Baptist Association from the Middle Fork Saluda Church. He, too, is missing from the 1810 census; yet he and Sarah (Sarah Ward, Solomon's first wife) sold land (M/464) 29 Oct 1814, and he alone sold land (M/603) 30 Oct 1814, his last SC transaction. Sales of Solomon's land are in the following records; H/388, O/244, K/91, K198, I/14 and M/454. Other purchases are in the following: H/388 and M/231; He got a 301 1/2 acre grant on 2 Mar 1807. Tradition has it that he moved to Blount Co., AL from TN in 1818. Report from MGA, Vice President, Davis A. Murphree, The Murphree Quarterly, Sep 1971, page 24-25. We know Solomon went to TN, but have been unable to find him in the 1810 census and there are no census records for Blount Co., AL in 1820. There is a period of time that we know nothing about Solomon's family. Somewhere in this period of time his wife died, and he married again in Jan 1823. In the 1790, Pendleton District, SC, census shows Solomon with five sons and one daughter and his wife. He was listed as a Revolutionary War Veteran in the Salisbury District. He died in AL and is buried in Eulaton Cemetery, Anniston, Benton, AL (Marker placed at Bynum Cemetery, Blount Co., AL) Solomon Murphree enlisted as a soldier in the Revolution in NC, August 5, 1779 for the duration of the war. Private Solomon Murphree served in the 10th Regiment, Blount's Company under Colonel Abraham Shepherd and received pay for his service in the Saisburg District. For his service in the Revolutionary War, Solomon emigrated to US before Revolutionary War Solomon Murphree was granted 150 acres between Washington's and Horner's line on Sinking Creek. Son, Daniel, came to Blount Co, AL in 1817 to settle on land granted to Solomon as a Homestead, this land became known as the William B Murphree farm and was owned by him or family for 105 years. Sold in 1953 by Joe Murphree. Daniel also cleared land adjoining for his own Homestead. This was sold to James B Hyatt in 1889 and is now owned (1958) by Hyatt's daughter, Docie, who is Daniel's great-grandaughter. 1826: The old Pendleton District in SC was divided into Pickens and Anderson Districts. The Bynum book says that she married Jesse Ellis, probably the same man her sister, Hannah married. Bruce Jordan does not agree with that. There was a minute book of Mt. Moriah Church which Solomon Murphree organized 18 March 1820. The list of charter members shows it to be a family church with 7 charter members, viz. Solomon Murphree, his son Daniel Murphree, son-in-law Asa Bynum, sister-in-law Mary Marshbanks, daughter Rebecca Bynum, Nancy Murphree, and Rachel a black sister. As this was a family church and we know on 27 July 1821 Nancy Murphree married Benjamin Ellis, it is not hard to believe that Nancy Murphree was Solomon's daughter. In 1830 census of Blount Co., Benjamin Ellis and wife are both in the 30/40 year bracket (with 3 m and 2f under 10); this would indicate or prove that Nancy was born before 1800. Let us look at Solomon Murphree's census record in Pendleton District, SC for 1790; males 16 and up, 1; males under 16, 1; females, 6. This checks with Daniel's Bible record. The 1800 record of Solomon is; males to 26, 1; males to 45, 1; females to 10, 4; females to 16, 4; females to 26, 1; females to 45, 1; This checks with Daniel's Bible record except the under 10 bracket. The census says 4 and the Bible only records 3, viz. Hannah 25 Aug 1791, Elizabeth 7 Nov 1793, Sarah 17 May 1796. The census records show Nancy Ellis was born before 1800, so I conclude Nancy Murphree was the fourth female in the under 10 bracket of 1800 census, probably born 1798 or 1799. The Murphree Quarterly: March 1974, page 119. by Paul Murphree I have had a number of inquires about Solomon's daughter Nancy, who married Benjamin Ellis. Most of which I have been unable to answer. Mr. and Mrs. O.D. Bates of Irvin, Texas have furnished me with a list of their children which l will pass on to you. The first information I have on Nancy is that of her name being listed as a Charter Member of Old Mount Moriah Pumative Baptist Church in Murphree's. Valley March 18, 1820. She married Benjamin Ellis in Blount County July 27th., 1821. She got her letter of dismission from the church at their meeting in Jan. 1837. She is listed in the Randolph County Census shortly thereafter and was living in Randolph County when Solomon died, therefore none of her children's names are mentioned when Solomon.'s will was settled. This group of travelers included David Murphree (son of Daniel Murphree and Sarah Dempsey), his wife Jemima Cornelius (daughter of William C. Cornelius and Ann Phillips), & many of their children and grandchildren. David, who had fought in the American Revolution, opera- ted a gristmill at Airmount, Mississippi until his death in 18 February 1838. David and his wife, Jemima, are both buried at Airmount, Mississippi. Their graves are distinguished by a marker noting that David had fought in the American Revolution. A rock pen to keep out wild animals surrounds the grave. The old grist stone used by David is also there. In 1790, David and Jemima were in Pendleton District, South Carolina. By 1808, they had moved to Rhea County, Tennessee, where he was on a committee of five named to select the county site. David was a Justice of the Peace there. His son, Martin, serviced under General Andrew Jackson in the Indian Wars and the Battle of New Orleans. About 1818, the Murphrees moved to Alabama, where David was Justice of Quorum in Blount County. His son, Martin, served as the Justice of the Peace. In 1819, David received government land in Walker County and in 1822 served as Justice of the Peace in Jefferson County. His last move was to Yalobusha, but his son Martin moved on to Old Town, Calhoun County, Mississippi. Notes for DANIEL MURPHREE: Daniel came to Blount Co., AL in 1817 to clear and settle on land granted to Solomon as a homestead. He used his father slaves for this project. This land became known as the William B. Murphree farm and was owned by him or the family for 105 years. It was sold in 1953 by Joe Murphree. Daniel also cleared land adjoining for his own homestead. This was sold to James B. Hyatt in 1889 and is now owned (1958) by Hyatt's daughter, Docie who is Daniel's great-grandaughter. Daniel and the Slaves cut out a seven-mile road from Walnut Grove to the Murphree place, making a ford at Wipporwill Creek. The Bynum book says that she married Jesse Ellis, probably the same man her sister, Hannah married. Bruce Jordan does not agree with that. There was a minute book of Mt. Moriah Church which Solomon Murphree organized 18 March 1820. The list of charter members shows it to be a family church with 7 charter members, viz. Solomon Murphree, his son Daniel Murphree, son-in-law Asa Bynum, sister-in-law Mary Marshbanks, daughter Rebecca Bynum, Nancy Murphree, and Rachel a black sister. As this was a family church and we know on 27 July 1821 Nancy Murphree married Benjamin Ellis, it is not hard to believe that Nancy Murphree was Solomon's daughter. In 1830 census of Blount Co., Benjamin Ellis and wife are both in the 30/40 year bracket (with 3 m and 2f under 10); this would indicate or prove that Nancy was born before 1800. Let us look at Solomon Murphree's census record in Pendleton District, SC for 1790; males 16 and up, 1; males under 16, 1; females, 6. This checks with Daniel's Bible record. The 1800 record of Solomon is; males to 26, 1; males to 45, 1; females to 10, 4; females to 16, 4; females to 26, 1; females to 45, 1; This checks with Daniel's Bible record except the under 10 bracket. The census says 4 and the Bible only records 3, viz. Hannah 25 Aug 1791, Elizabeth 7 Nov 1793, Sarah 17 May 1796. The census records show Nancy Ellis was born before 1800, so I conclude Nancy Murphree was the fourth female in the under 10 bracket of 1800 census, probably born 1798 or 1799. The first information I have on Nancy is that of her name being listed as a Charter Member of Old Mount Moriah Pumative Baptist Church in Murphree's. Valley March 18, 1820. She married Benjamin Ellis in Blount County July 27th., 1821. She got her letter of dismission from the church at their meeting in Jan. 1837. She is listed in the Randolph County Census shortly thereafter and was living in Randolph County when Solomon died, therefore none of her children's names are mentioned when Solomon.'s will was settled. Notes for SOLOMON MURPHREE III: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #3814, Date of Import: 11 Jan 1998] A new grave marker has been placed at the grave of Solomon Murphree at Rocky Mount Cemetery marking his service in the Confederate Cavalry under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Solomon fell in the Civil War battle of Brice's Crossroads, near Baldwyn. Solomon's family was notified of his death. His brother, Charles E. Murphree went to the battlefield and dug up Solomon's body, put it in a casket, loaded it onto a wagon and brought his brother home to Rocky Mount Cemetery. He was buried by his father, Ransom Murphree. A month later, another brother of Charles', William W. Murphree, died of war wounds was buried next to Solomon. Solomon originally enlisted into Co. F, 42nd Regiment, Mississippi infantry. The company formed April 29, 1862 in Calhoun County. Solomon's term of enlistment ran out during the war, and he reenlisted was was placed into Co. B, 8th Mississippi Cavalry under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Solomon was the son of Ransom Murphree, who was the son of David and Jemima Cornelius Murphree. They were among the original settlers in Yalobusha County about 1835 shortly after the final treaty with the Chickasaw Indians, the Treaty of Pontotoc Creek (1835). David Murphree's family traveled to this area in a caravan of 30 oxen-drawn wagons and settled in Honeycutt, later known as Airmount, east of Coffevilled. They can originally from Pendleton District, S.C. moved to Rhea County, Tennessee, then to Blount County, Alabama, and then onto this area. Several of the sons and daughters moved on eastward into what is now Calhoun County. xi.
