Generation No. 1

1. JOHN W.1 DRAKE was born Abt. 1839 in Van Burren County, Tennessee, and died Aft. 1880. He married MARY A (DRAKE) Abt. 1854 in possibly Franklin County, Tennessee. She was born in Tennessee.

Notes for J
OHN W. DRAKE:
Source is the 1880 US Census for Warren Co, TN.

"The following account of the early Drakes is taken from the book
"English and Ameridan Drakes," by W. T. Drake:

"The Drakes are an ancient family. The name is from the latin 'Drago'
and signifies one who draws, or leads--a leader--and was obtained from the
Greek, an Athenian legislator who, 600 years before Christ, drew up a code
of laws for the people. In all probability, the first Drake or Drago in
England was a Roman soldier with the army of Julius Caesar who, instead of
returning to the Roman Empire, remained in England and founded the Drake
family, which was well settled in the County of Devon when William the
Conquerer came over from France in 1066.

"After the conquest the Drake families, a clan, took possession of what
is now the Manor of Musbury in Devon County in the western part of England.
It was subsequently called "Mount Drake" where a church was built and
where, in the days of Queen Elizabeth, the Drakes had a mortuary chapel
which was afterward lengthened toDrake AIsle." There was afortified house
at "Mount Drake" before the "House of Ashe" was established in 1420 by the
marriage of John Drake and Christian, the daughter and heiress of John

An 1880 US Census Record from Warren Co, TN shows the family of John W Drake as reflected in the family of Biddie Drake. I assume that the Bidy Drake in this census record is my Grandmother.--Herb Hurn. This has been confirmed by contact with Jamelle Linker, a descendant of John Miller Drake, in an Email that follows:

Greetings in the name of the Lord!
I just found your family tree on ancestry.com and became very
excited. I am sort of the family historian for the descendants of
Biddie's little brother John Miller Drake. I knew about Gr.Aunt
Biddie, but my aunt thought her married name was Hurron so I had
not been able to find her previously.
I would love to compare notes, as I am actively searching the
Drakes just now and plan a trip to Warren and Van Buren
Counties, TN. next week.
In Christ....J. Linker

The following is noteworthy about the Drake family in England and America.

Billett of Ashe. This John Drake is the first from whom a lineal descent
can be traced (In 1915?).

"The first Drake on English record was a John Drake who owned lands in
1272. In the year 1313 a John Drake received permission of Edward II to go
"beyond the sea. Undoubtedly he settled in Ireland and founded Drakerath
in the County of Meathe. The Drakes scattered, locating in Shipden,
Norfolk, and Yorkshire. Branches of these families settled in Scotland,
Ireland, and Holland, many being the "Landed Gentry," each family having
its own crest but all using the same arms. Many of these families are
representerd in the United States (of America) by descendents of Drakes who
came here between the years 1630-1776 and later. While these claimed no
relationship, all surely descended from the ancient Drakes of England.

The first Drake on record to come to America was John Drake who came
with Winthrop to Boston in 1630 and settled at Windsor, Connecticutt, where
he died 17 August 1659, leaving a widow and three sons who became the
anscestors of most of the Drakes in Southwestern New England, the Middle
and Western States. On September 8, 1636, a Robert Drake settled in
Virginia and was granted 200 acres of land. Another Robert Drake, born in
Essex County in England in 1580, came with sons and a daughter and died 14
January 1668 at Hampton, New Hampshire. The same year a Samuel Drake came
to Fairfield, Connecticutt, later moving to East Chester. His two sons,
Joseph of East CHester and Samuel, Jr. of West Chester, New York were the
ancestors of most of the Drakes of New York State."

[JohnWDrake.FTW]

Goldie Drake's only remembrance of Beecham was going with her father to his home in Marvel for a visit. She was then left there for some time until her mother sent word for her to come home on the train. She was a child when this happened and did not remember why.
(note that in 1915 when Goldie would have been 9yrs, J.M. and family were living in Gurnee, north of Marvel... L.B. and family in Coleanor just to the south of Marvel.)
The 1900 census lists a Beechey Drake living in Carbon Hill (John Miller and Ellen were living nearby). L.B. Drake died in 1915 in Coleanor, near Marvel, in Bibb Co. The death certificate says he was 47 and is buried in Johns (Jefferson Co., between Bessemer and Abernant). He was a "mine boss," married, and had been ill for 12 hours. He had lived in Coleanor for 2 years.
