Daniel Forest Kirk married Sadia Della Eveline Hulvey Nov 24, 1907; their children are Herman Floyd, Lizzie Lavoice, James Hite, Tom Bill, and Daniel Arthur.
In the marriage record book 2 the handwriting is very curly and hard to read, but it looks like Wm. W. Kirk to Leah S. Hurn, and I think I recall seeing her name as Sylvia somewhere. I will check on that.
Just found the Family tree of Daniel Forest (Fairest) Kirk which lists James and Leah Dunn as parents of Nancy Dunn (B. Aug. 2, 1808) who married Paul Randal Hurn; their children are Simon Peter b. Apr 25, 1829; James b. 1830 (married Nancy Mary Spikes); John b. Mar 1, 1831; Matthew b. June 13, 1833 wed Jan 1854 to Margarett Matilda Alexander; Amelia Elizabeth b. Note that says William Washington Kirk of Randolph County, Pocahontas, Arkansas and Leah S. Celia Hurn of Randolph County, Pocahontas, Arkansas on November 19, 1866 were married at B. F. Tyler's by B. J. Hawkins, Justice of the Peace. Witnesses were B. F. Tyle and Nancy Jane Hurn Tyler. That is the date she became Leah Silvia. Marriage was recorded on 11/20/1866; separated in the summer of 1914 between July 15 and August 15.
Nancy Jane Hurn Tyler, sister of Leah Celia Hurn Kirk was first married to Jesse McCoy who was reported to have drowned coming home from the Civil War. So Benjamin Franklin Tyler was her second husband
A cousin has done extensive research on the Kirk side of the family and may have more on the Hurns to verify any of this. I will try to contact her and find out if she has run across anything.
This just gets too complicated and hard to keep straight. Their handwriting is so bad, and they didn't keep very good records anyway. So what do you think?
Keep in touch.

Subject: Re: Hurn family connections
Hi! Yesterday, I received from Carol Thompson (a person with whom I have corresponded about various bits and pieces of Randolph County genealogy) a copy of a 1986 article in the Pocahontas Star Herald about The Hurn family in America.
(Researched and documented by Orville G. Spikes, July 23, 1986, 2402 Sims Ave., St. Louis, Mo. 63114; phone 1-314-428-8260) -- [He's no longer living.])
One source Orville used, of course, was "The GOODSPEED BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL MEMOIRS OF NORTHEASTERN ARKANSAS,' but he also has listed other information and his conclusions. This may be more than you want, but I thought you would find this of interest.
'THE GOODSPEED BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL MEMOIRS OF NORTHEASTERN ARKANSAS" on pages 399 and 400 gives a sketch of Simon Peter Hurn. It lists his parents' names, as well as names all brothers and sisters and also names his grandfather. They are as follows: JAMES, SIMON PETER, farmers in Randolph County, Arkansas. (This being a sketch of Simon Peter Hurn and not a family history accounts for the fact not much information on the rest of the family is given here.) It states Simon Peter Hurn is one of ten children, and was born in Monroe County, Georgia, April 25, 1829, and is a son of Randall and Nancy (Dunn) Hurn, natives of North Carolina and Georgia, respectively. James was born about 1828, in Georgia.
It is my guess JAMES HURN came to Arkansas in 1850 with the rest of his family. He married a sister to my grandfather, Jacob Columbus Spikes (she was Nancy M. Spikes) on Dec. 19, 1853. The 1910 Randolph County Directory states this marriage was in 1854. This is close enough. The Dec. 29, 1853 is from the Randolph County marriage records and may have been the date the marriage license was issued and the actual ceremony took place three or four days later.
Now for the rest of the children of Randall and Nancy (Dunn) Hurn. PAUL R. HURN, a farmer in Washington County, Arkansas, MARK, a farmer of Clay County, Arkansas, EZEKIEL, a minister of the Washington County Primitive Baptist Church of Washington County, Arkansas, PERMELIA E. HURN,
wife of James Sammonds of Randolph County, Arkansas, NANCY J. HURN, wife of Ben F. Tyler, a
farmer of Randolph County, Arkansas, LEAH S. HURN, wife of William Kirk of Randolph County, Arkansas.
Those deceased were JOHN HURN, and MATHEW HURN who was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in Randolph County, Arkansas. This completes the ten children of Randall and Nancy (Dunn) Hurn. Randall Hurn moved to Georgia when a young man and married a Georgia girl, and lived there until moving to Randolph County, Arkansas in 1850, where he died in May, 1858, when 66 years of
age, followed by his widow two years later when aged about 56 years.
Randall's father was also named JAMES HURN who was born in Ireland, served in the Continental army during the Revolutionary War, and was a participant in many battles, being at Yorktown when the British General Cornwallis surrendered, giving America her freedom from England. This James Hurn who was born in Ireland is as far back as I (Orville) can trace the Hurn family at this time.(1986) This James Hurn died in North Carolina, the same state where his son Randall was born. The Revolutionary War started in 1776, I believe, if my memory serves me right.
It will be noted that Simon Peter Hurn and his brother Mathew Hurn married sisters who were Sarah Jane Alexander and Matilda Alexander. After their father's death, their mother married Wiliam (Pappy Billy) Spikes Sr., becoming his step-daughters. Sarah Jane Alexander married Simon Peter Hurn, Nov. 21, 1850, and Matilda Alexander married Mathew Hurn, Jan. 13, 1854. The children of Simon Peter Hurn and Sarah Jane Alexander Hurn are eight in number and are: MATILDA E HURN, MARY L. HURN, JOHN W. HURN, EMILY J. HURN, LUTHER D. HURN, PETER M. HURN, ELIZA ANN HURN, LESLIE H. HURN and THOMAS F. HURN. Here are nine names instead of eight. PETER M. HURN died when 6 years of age.
The 1910 Randolph County Directory states James Hurn came to Randolph County in 1840 from Georgia, which seems to be in error as he would be only about 12 years old at that time. This is why I believe he came to Arkansas with his family in 1850. The only way he could have come to Arkansas in 1840 was to be apprenticed to another family and brought to Arkansas by the other family. This was practiced to some extent in those days and usually meant several years for their room, board, clothing and schooling, mostly until they reached age 21 for males, and somewhat younger for females.
It can be stated here from Goodspeed sketch of Simon Peter Hurn that he and all his brothers and sisters were also grandchildren of James Dunn who was the father of Nancy Dunn Hurn, wife of Randall Hurn. James Dunn was born in North Carolina and also served in the American army during the Revolution. Not only was Simon Peter Hurn a farmer but also learned the butcher's and stone mason's trades at which he worked for many years.
Back to the 1910 Randolph County Directory. James Hurn, age 82 (in 1910), farmer, came from Georgia in 1840, married Nancy Spikes in 1854, eight children, ELIZABETH HURN, JANE HURN, WILLIE HURN, JOSEPHENE HURN, JOHN HURN, PETE HURN and TOM HURN. Tom Hurn was Thomas G. Hurn. THOMAS G. HURN, age 34 (in 1910), farmer, native of Arkansas, married Vicy Keech in 1902, two children, J. and Fay. J. had to be Jay Orville Hurn, the father of Vesta Lee and Mary Jay Hurn. He is buried in Spikes Cemetery. I believe
Josephene Hurn married Robert (Bob) Davenport. Vesta Lee Hurn lives in Decatur, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, and Mary Jay Hurn lives in Chicago, Illinois. Uncle Jim Hurn has two granddaughters living in Pocahontas, Arkansas now. They are Mrs. Harold (Opal) Stacy, 1614 Frenken Street, phone 892-5426, and her sister Mrs. Clowell (Essie) Croom, 1628 Frenken Street, phone 892-5677. Mart Hogan, 1600 Lewis Street, phone 892-3055 may be able to shed some light on the date Uncle Jim Hurn died. He lived in the same neighborhood as Uncle Jim Hurn when a young man. He is related through the John A. Johnston side. The eldest sister, Elizabeth Spikes married John A. Johnson. Uncle Jim Hurn fought in that terrible battle of Atlanta, Georgia in the Civil War. That is the war where brother fought against brother and father against son.
We have established Uncle Jim Hurn was 82 years old in 1910, it is also known he was still living in 1912 when a man and his son shot and killed another man as he rode his horse by a certain home on his way home. Uncle Jim Hurn was a witness in that Trial when a man and son were convicted and sent to the penitentiary, but were pardoned by the governor and released after two or three years. They came back to Randolph County, loaded up and moved to Texas and never came back to Arkansas again. Attorney Tom Campbell stated in his book, 'Arkansas Lawyer', that the father and son came to him to defend them in their trial but Campbell told them they would have to get somebody else as he had already been hired to help prosecute them. The two then hired Bill Jackson, Jerry Maloy and a hot shot lawyer from Batesville to defend them. This lawyer Tom Campbell married Miss Jennie Roberts of Vernon, Randolph County, Arkansas in 1895. I knew and remember so many of the people named in his book, 'Arkansas Lawyers'.
Another thing that always been a puzzle to me is that the census records show that Robert N. Hamil and his half-brother William H. Waddle were born in Indiana. The father of William H. Waddle was Dr. Jacob Waddle (who was a brother to Henry Waddle, from whom the Ingram Waddles are descended) and Permelia Waddle who married Joseph W. Spikes, were my great-grandparents.
Now, after the death of Dr. Jacob Waddle his widow, married William A. Hamil, the father of Robert N. Hamil. Now, here's the catch: They were married in Randolph County, Arkansas about 1845. This is from the Randolph County, Arkansas marriage records. No one seems to know the answer. Recently I have talked to Mrs. Lois Hamil Brown and the daughter of Duke and Neil Hamil Lucas, both in Little Rock, Arkansas. Also, I have talked to the present Mrs. Dr. W.E. Hamil, a very pleasant lady to talk to. It seems no one knows anything for sure. From Randolph County, Ark. marriage records, William A. Hamil married Sarah E. Waddle, Feb. 14, 1845.

Before i answer your E-mail, i had done some research about the Hurn in Ireland and suggested to one of you that it might have been spelt HEARN. Well, i mentioned this to mom and she told me that Bud Bottom (grandma's nephew who looked JUST like him and i met some 20 years ago (he also died
a couple of weeks ago of cancer) had told my mom that our name was originally: O'Hurn and of course, they dropped the "O" when they came to the states.
