* Chasing Hannigan & Other Wraiths, Some of Them Irish*

Updated August 4, 2010

Hugh Foy HANNIGAN likely emigrated to Hudson, Columbia county, New York circa 1847 during the Potato Famine. It is likely he came from Braca, Buncrana or Glenties in County Donegal, Ireland. He married first Elizabeth SULLIVAN. She died in 1854. After her death, Hugh served in the New York military for a few years. He married second, Bridget WHOOLEY who bore him several children. They appear in 1860 through 1880 censuses in and near Fond du Lac, Wisconsin before moving to Henry, Codington county, South Dakota where he died in 1899 and Bridget passed away in 1907. Related are a Doctor D Ward Scanlan of Atlantic City, New Jersey, ; cheese making Scannells near Eden, Wisconsin & various Fitzgeralds and Foys married into the Hannigan family.

Am wondering if Elizabeth SULLIVAN was related to 2 brothers, Henry & Frederick, who, during the late 1800s had a photographic studio - Sullivan Bros. - in Hudson, New York.

Another family mystery is the origin, siblings and parentage of Benjamin PORTER who may have been born circa 1801 - 1806 in New York or Pennsylvania and his wife Julia Ann or Julienne WERNER or WARNER. They likely married prior to 1834 but don't know where. Most of their children were born in Ontario, Canada in Haldimand, Huron and Middlesex counties. His son Martin & most of his daughters moved to Michigan. One daughter married Henry FARMER and moved to Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. Benjamin's gravesite is unknown as yet. He expired in East Williams twp, Middlesex county, Ontario 27 March 1879. Julia is buried in Bay City, Michigan but I have not uncovered a death record or obituary for her.

Where oh where in America did William WATERHOUSE and his first wife, Johanna STRICKLAND originate before settling in Brantford, Ontario ?

George CUNNINGHAM lived in Norfolk county, Ontario, Canada and married Magdalene SPRINGSTEAD / SPRINGSTEEN & moved to Michigan's thumb area.

Does anybody out there know the Scottish ancestry of Matthew GILMOUR & his wife Agnes FORSYTHE who are probably buried in Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal, Quebec near recorded graves of kin ?

Who were the parents of Nicholas CONWAY and his wife Mary FREEMAN whose son Lawrence died in 1853 at Belle River, Ontario, Canada. Lawrence married Therese RENAUD.
