Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 TAGGART1 was born August 12, 1756 in Ireland, and died September 1830 in Belmont County, Ohio. He married SARAH JANE MCCARTNEY October 15, 1777. She was born 17522, and died March 30, 1830 in Belmont County, Ohio.

Notes for J
OHN TAGGART:
The first of our Taggart ancestors to settle in America was John Taggart.
He was born in County Down Ireland 12 Aug 1756. He was of Scottish stock
whose people were moved from Scotland to Ireland during the reign of
James the 1st. These people displeased the king because they disagreed
with him over the way their Presbyterian church should be governed. John
Taggart was a member of the seceding Presbyterian Church. He emigrated
to America landing in Baltimore MD on May 6 1775 after a 20 week voyage.
John was a soldier in Col. Anthony Wayne's regiment during the Revolution.
On Oct 15 1777 in York Co PA he married Sarah Jane McCartney also a
native of Ireland.

James Taggart, eldest son of John Taggart and Sarah Jane McCartney was
born 27 Jun 1778 in York Co. PA. He was a soldier in the War of 1812.
He married Catherine Stitt and moved his family to Belmont Co OH and
settled near St Clairsville.

William Taggart, son of James Taggart and Catherine Stitt was born Mar 5
1811 in Richland Township, Belmont Co Oh. When quite young he is reputed to
have walked to Wayne Co OH settling near Wooster. He was an industrious
man and early learned to make saddle-trees. In a short time he owned a
good farm in Wayne Co. He was active in the state agricultural society.
He was a member of the Baptist Church. He married Lydia Reiter 3 Apr 1835.

The Reiter family had it's origins in the German Palatinate along the lower
Rhine River. There is mention of the name in records of the early 17th
century. Palatinate people, both German and French, were largely Protestants
and suffered much during the Thirty Years war. Many were induced to seek
a new life in America through the efforts of Queen Ann of England. These
people, the Reiter's among them were the "Pennsylvania Dutch".

The first record of Reiters is one Michael who married Anna Marie Fogler,
daughter of William and Catherine Fogler.

William Reiter, son of Michael Reiter and Anna Marie Fogler, was born in
Mehlhoffen, Zweibrucken, German Palatinate, on Aug 10 1720. He was
married to Anna Margaret Klein on Jun 24 1747. The family emigrated
in 1752. They settled in Oley Township, Berks Co PA. One of their
children died on the ship coming to America. William died Aug 6 1806.

Michael Reiter, son of William Reiter and Anna Margaret Klein was born
in Oley Township, Berks Co PA Feb 24 1753. He married Anna Margaret
Gresemer, daughter of Casper and Rebecca Gresemer. Michael died
Sep 5 1818. Anna was born Apr 4 1756 and died Dec 27 1828.

William Reiter, one of 12 children of Michael Reiter and Anna Margaret
Gresemer, was born in Oley Township, Berks Co PA on Feb 4 1787.
In Mar 1806 he married Susan Herner, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth
Herner. William Reiter died in Wayne Co OH near Wooster on Mar 18 1863.
Susan died Oct 9 1866 in Wayne Co OH near Wooster.

This information was passed down from one of our ancestors. Some I have
documented and some I have not. John Taggart being in the Revolutionary
War has not been verified and believe me I've tried. The archives says they
have no record and he isn't listed in any of the indexes I have found. The
samegoes for James Taggart and the War of 1812. I would certainly like to see
some proof of both instances. Any way this is pretty good stuff.
