Notes for Johann Adam Berlin:
The Berlin name is represented by the Berlin Family Crest. We are descendants of European ancestors who were called "Berl", the German word for bear.
The Berlin name dates back to at least the 17th century in Alsace-Lorraine. While we have been able to trace our direct lineage to the year 1598, there is reason to believe we are related to earlier members of the Berlin family from that region. They were numerous and lived in close proximity to Niederbronn.
The first mention we have been able to find of the Berlin name is in "The Golden Book of Strasbourg City." The following statement appears: "first named Johannes (John) son of Peter said "Berlin" once burgher (citizen) of the town Strasbourg, and wife Anna noted in the year 1200." Apparently, Johannes Berlin returned to the town of Strasbourg in the year 1200. His parents had at one time been citizens there and had since moved elsewhere.
The next mention of the Berlin name is found in the records of the city council. "First mention by this name in the council of Strasbourg. John Junior Berlin named in the year 1334." A Johannes Berlin is mentioned in 1200. The name Johann Berlin is mentioned again in the year 1356 as a member of what we refer to as the "Guild" or union representing the skilled craftsmen of the era. "Johannes Berlin is a member of the corporation "The Dragoon" in the year 1356. Bernard Mursel Berlin noted in the year 1369.
In 1391 Johann Berhadr Mursel Berlin is again noted in the town documents. In the same year Johann Berlin Junior is mentioned as a member of the council of Strasbourg. In 1397 the following statement appears: "Johann Berlin Burgermeister (Mayor of the city of Strasbourg) nominated this year 1397. Arms: three (3) walking bears, one man on whose clothes the same mention and on the helmut too." This is the one of three (3) coat of arms, of the Berlin family, found in the Alsace-Lorraine area.
Then there is a Hans John Berlin who bought the right of citizenship in the year 1446 and was still living in Strasbourg in the year 1496. And finally, Jerg Berlin, Administrator of the Abbey of Gengenbach before 1500. The same Jerg Berlin died in the year 1507, apparently the last in his family. - Reginald L. Berlin
