Notes for Johann Jacob Berlin:
!Immigrated on 9 Nov 1738 to Phildelphia, Arrived on the ship, "Charming Nancy:. Sailing from Rotterdam, Holland with a stopover in Cowes on the Isle of Wright. The English authorities checked all passengers for any Catholics because they were trying to keep undesirable religious groups away from their colonies. (The Berlin Family Vol. 1--Author Reginald L. Berlin)
Early information about Jacob is sketchy. He was a constable in Berwick Twp., York Co., in 1752. He is mentioned as one of the officers of the newly dedicated St. Matthew's Church in Hanover. The name change occurred in 1827. In 1758 he took out a warrant for land in York County, and a patent for the same land in April of 1762. that is also the first year Jacob is found on the tax lists of York County. Jacob's farm was three and a half miles northeast of Hanover. The farm was located in an area known as Popular Spring. The farm varied in size from 225 acres, at its largest, to 190 acres. He owned the farm from 1762 until 1782 when the farm was listed in his son, Nicholas' name.
In the 1798 tax lists Nicholas Berlin's name appears with the following information: a wood house, 30 by 26, one story with five windows, on two acres, valued at four-hundred dollars. Another one story wood house, 30 by 24 with two windows, on two acres, valued at one-hundred and fifty dollars. Also a barn, 80 by 30, made of wood on one hundred and eighty-eight acres, valued at fifteen hundred and four dollars in Berwick Township. I believe we can safely assume that his father resided in one of these houses.
!The birth date on the tombstone is different from the church records at Niederbronn. This is due to the change from the Julian calendar in 1752 to the Gregorian calendar.
!Jacob died of blood poisoning. He left a will in Berwick Twp., York Co., PA
His burial place was in the Lutheran Cemetery, in the old section, across the street from St. John's Lutheran Church.
