Caleb Litton, Sr. (b. Apr 24, 1678, d. May 12, 1763)
Notes for Caleb Litton, Sr.:
One report has it that this Caleb was born 1690 in County Devon, England and died April 21, 1759 in Frederick Co., MD. I believe this death date is incorrect, but list it to show there is some controversy regarding Caleb. This Caleb was baptized in Devonshire, England.
According to Balfour Oliver Lytton, Sr. in his book "Remembering the Past to Preserve the Future", Caleb "served as a soldier in the British Royal Dragoons in the Maryland Colony from 1700 to 1720 and earned the right of a 405 acre bounty of land in the Maryland Colony. This land grant was surveyed for him in 1722 and he married Grace Hartley Burton the following year."
Researchers Barbara & Fred Naef - ([email protected]) provided two items of interest, 1) The earliest documentary record of Caleb Letton was dated 3 May 1714 when he witnessed a will in Prince George's County, Maryland and 2) on 3 December 1726, Caleb Letton was elected to the first vestry of Prince George's Parish.
Researcher Nancy Hilliard - ([email protected]) has this data; "Caleb Letton, Sr., 2nd husband, a soldier b. 1690 or '91 or '95; Baltimore, Chase Co., or Prince Georges Co., MD; or England d. about 1763 or 1787 - by a Will; Montgomery Co., MD." I don't believe this is our Caleb although the death date is the same year. HDS.
There was also conflicting data on who this Caleb's parents are, Michael Letton and Johanna Pollockfield or Richard Letton, son of John Lee Litton, son of Sir William Litton from Ireland or Thomas Litton/Lytton (son of Thomas Letton) b. about 1660 Baltimore, Hartford Co., MD who married Ann Hawkins b. 1661. My theory coincides with Nancy Lehto - ([email protected]) in which I believe Michael and Johanna Pollockfield to be the correct parents. HDS.
In 1754 Caleb, then living in Frederick Co., MD, sold 33 acres ("Autra") which was part of 405 acres [this is the bounty land he was given abt. 1722] in Rock Creek Park, Prince Georges Co., (now Montgomery Co.) MD. This property was sold to Thos. Allison, (Source: Frederick Co. Deed Book E, Pg. 604).
The will of Caleb was probated May 12, 1763 (which is the same as my date of death) and names as beneficiaries, his wife Grace, his sons Michael, Caleb, John, daughters Grace Summers and Johannah Hall.
Research by Daryl Lytton by way of Lula I. M. Thompson (dec'd), "James and his brother who moved to VA had received their shares of Autra before their father's death, hence are not mentioned in his will." Further, "As a foster parent he took in Nov 1724 Esther Falby b. Apr 29 1722, d/o Honoria Falby; and in Mar 1735 Harding Evans b. Mar 14 1721, and William Kitchin b. Oct 9 1726. "
