* The Ireland Family*

Updated November 9, 2006

I am researching my immediate family in the male line. The family originates in the Fife area of Scotland and centres on St. Monance, Kinglassie, Dysart and Dunfermline.

I have records from Alexander St. Monance Abt. 1540 to the present. I can also reach the 1500's on the maternal Lodder line from Dorset and from there back to 1300 and Richard Metiarewe and the Meteyard line.

The Ireland family were Fife sailors and farmers and my line owned an Ironmongery business in Dunfermline after moving from Dysart and from thence split up all over Scotland. My immediate family went first to Glasgow where George Ireland (born 1839) became a Spirits Trader. His son George (born 1873) left Glasgow to join the Scottish Rifles (2nd. Btn.)(Cameronians) and met and married Lucy Westfield in Portsmouth who was the daughter of James & Lucy Westfield. Her mother Lucy was a Lodder from Fontmell Magna in Dorset. Moving to Canterbury after leaving the Army, he rejoined in 1915 at Canterbury and was promptly killed at Ypres in May 1915 serving with the 2nd. Btn. The Buffs, The East Kent Regt.

Both his sons joined the Buffs as Regular Soldiers becoming Warrant Officers serving through the 20's the second World War and beyond. John married Una Humphrey whose family originated in Sussex, Cowfold and George married Elizabeth Wells from London who was the aunt of Doreen Wells from the Royal Ballet. I followed suit but went instead to the Royal Military Police and then the Metropolitan Police. Alexander, my eldest son, joined the Scots Guards and Andrew, my youngest, became a Piper in the London Scottish, a Territorial Regiment, prefering the world of computers as a software engineer. He now owns his own business, Plugware Solutions.

Having retired early, politics is now my life and I serve the community as both a Town and District Councillor in my home town.
