* The Robert Morris and Dollie Mae Ladd Irvin Family*

Updated August 31, 2008

Welcome to our family home page. Here you will find information on the Irvin and Emberton families of Kentucky, and the Ladd and Settle families of Arkansas and Missouri.

As children, our parents always told us that we were Irish and Indian, but family memory in many cases only extended back a couple generations. So about 10 years ago we began trying to research and collect information on our family history. We've gotten and continue to get great help from elder family members and distant cousins who share our passion for family research.

On this website we'll try to collect and update the latest information that we've collected, and publish genealogy reports for several of our major family lines. While we have solid source documentation for our direct ancestors, we don't in all cases have that for their brothers, sisters and cousins. Much of this information has come from other researchers and is very useful for sorting out family groupings, but the information may not be entirely correct in all cases. So please use some caution if you add any of this to your own research.

Starting in the early 1800's, all of our paternal Irvin and Emberton families center around the Appalachian / Cumberland areas of Kentucky and Tennessee. Prior to that they're found primarily in North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. The nearest mysteries are two of our 2nd Great Grandmothers; Delilah who married William McPeak, and the parents of Sarah F. McDonald, wife of Henry R. Emberton.

Paternal family known surnames going back 7 generations are: Irvin, Emberton, Bartley, McPeak, Fox, Birge, McDonald, Short, Fulkes, Meadows, Bacon, Brown, Morrow, Isenberg, Jackson, Coulter, Anderson, Caldwell, Garber and Moler.

On our Mother's side, we trace our Ladd family back to Ransom, born 1807 in South Carolina. Family legend has it that Ransom traveled by raft (or boat) with his parents to Missouri when he was a young boy, but lost his parents along the way to small pox, tuberculosis, or some such disease all too common at the time. A big mystery here is determining who Ransom's parents were. But the nearest mystery right now is our maternal Grandmother's mother, Dollie Mae Anderson Settle, and her parents William and Josephine Anderson.

Maternal family known surnames going back 8 generations are: Ladd, Settle, Murphy, Anderson, Gaines, Armstrong, Harris, Norman, Satterfield, Frizzell, Copeland, Welch, Wilson, Wheeler, Roberts, Chronister, Jay, Blackburn, and Whitesides.

Toward the bottom of this page we'll also be posting some historical family narratives that we hope will add a little more perspective to what we know, or think we know so far.

If you happen across this page and find any connections to your own family lines, I'd love to hear from you!
