This contains the family history of Norma Sue Gremar Ivie. (that's me!) I have also included information on my husband's "Ivie" family in the report section.
The Gremar surname was "Grimard" originally, and our ancestors came to the United States from France in the early or mid 1700's. Many Grimards can be found in Canada, also, but we have not found a connection to that branch of the family. Our early Grimards settled in Vincennes, IN which was part of the Louisiana Territory at that time. The Grimard surname has many variations in spelling today, such as: Greemore, Gremore, Gremar, Gremard, and Grimore. I was born in Portageville, MO which is located in New Madrid County but my birth actually occured at home which was in Pemiscot County. These counties are located in the "bootheel" area of the state. I grew up in Chaffee, Scott County, MO which is about 65 miles north of Portageville.
In my husband's family, the oldest Ivie ancestor we have found is Curtis Ivie who settled in Wabash County, Illinois in the early 1800's. A pair of scissors handed down in the family was inscribed "brought to the US from Ireland by Grandfather Ivie", indicating that Curtis (or his father) came from Ireland. Other records indicate he was born in England or Virginia! My husband, Donald E. Ivie, Sr. was born and raised in Cairo, Alexander County, IL.
I want to thank all those that shared their family information with me. I have included that information on this website. If I have errors, please contact me and I will make corrections as needed. I was so fortunate to find so many relatives willing to share their family history with me. Thanks again to all of you that have contributed to this database. I am still searching for more information and would love to hear from anyone else researching these surnames. Contact me for more information, as I am still learning to use this Site and have more information to include.
