| Frank Realmuto was my grandfather, dying before I was born. With the help of my friend and professional genealogist, Danny Hall of Salt Lake City, I have been able tro trace his ancestry through several generations. Realmuto is fairly rare name, not even particularly common is Sicily. It seems to be a corruption of the name of a Sicilian village, Racalmuto, named in the 13th century from an Arab term referring to the many graveyards, Rakal mut, "farmhouse of the dead." Baucina, a small town of about 2000 outside of Palermo, seems to have the highest concentration of Realmutos, and scores, perhaps hundreds, emigrated to the United States between 1890 and World War I. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or additional information. I hope to include more as time goes on. Liam Iwig-O'Byrne |
