A Gadsden man was killed early yesterday afternoon in a construction-related accident, according to Bill Bragg, county coroner.
Oliver G. Holland, 55, 1205 Dwight Ave., was killed when the road packer he was driving rolled down a 42-foot embankment off I-59.
Holland was packing asphalt in the north-bound lane when the shoulder apparently collapsed.
"The shoulder gave way and the packer rolled down an embankment over the victim. The packer came to rest right side up, still in gear, and then traveled another 100 feet," he said.
The mishap occurred about 12:45 p.m. and the vitim was discovered at 1:20 p.m. by another workman. He was still alive when found, but died as the ambulance was enroute to Holy Name of Jesus Hospital.
The accident occurred three miles west of Rainbow City exit of I-59.

Oliver Gordon Holland, 54, 1205 Dwight Ave., died yesterday from injuries received in an accident. Funeral services to be tomorrow 2 p.m. from Collier-Butler Chapel with Rev. Dennis Houk officiating. Burial in Altoona-Walnut Grove Cemetery. Survivors: wife, Mrs. Bertha Mae Holland; daughters, Mrs. Janice Huff and Miss Kelly Anne Holland, both of Gadsden; son, Gordon David Holland, Shreveport, La.; mother, Mrs. Mamie Smith, Altoona; sisters, Mrs. Violet Powell, Deland, Fla., Mrs. Edith McCray, Altoona; brother, Donald Ray Holland, Sweetwater, Tenn.; seven grandchildren. Active pallbearers; David and Donald Holland, Donald Bullington, Bernard Goble, Curt Carlson, and Rob Goble. Mr. Holland was a native and resident of Etowah County most of his life. He was a veteran of WWII and was employed with McCartney Construction Company. The body will remain at the funeral home through the hour of service. The family will receive friends after 2:30 p.m. today.
