The wife of Isham, while working as a girl in the sugar orchard, carried a bucket of sap in each hand and another on her head. The first of her 12 children were twins, and when the third was a baby she would ride to her father's home, 35 miles away, carrying the baby in front and the twins behind her. The return would be made the next day. She lived to the age of 98, at which time there were 89 decendants of her children. C. of Isham: Sarah, Mary, Abner (Tex.), Granville, Nancy J., Julia A., James H., Andrew J., Elizabeth S., Joseph H., Lewis A. [Oren Morton, History of Monroe Co., WV, p. 317.] Morton's listing of children is in error. These children are those of Andrew Jackson Burdette, Isham's son. Neither Morton nor my own research has positively identified the 12 children mentioned in the Monroe History. If Isham and Sarah's first children were twins, one would have been James Madison Burdette. In 1820 Monroe, however, there is only one son listed in the age range of 10-15 years.
