This information appears on a roll of prisoners of war at Harpers Ferry, WV. Captured By: Gen. Sheridan's Forces on September 19, 1864, at Winchester, Va. and sent to Point Lookout, Md. on Sept 23, 1864. His name appears on a list of prisoners of war paroled May 10 and 11, 1865 at various places in WV and Md. He was 29 yrs. old at this time. He never told any of his family, and just reasently the government recognized this and marked his grave. That's the first anyone new about it.

Private in Ballard's Company, 166th Militia, he enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army on March 26, 1862 in Union, Virginia by L.A. Lawter. Transfered on August 31, 1862 to Captain C.E. Vawter's Company, Company D, 30th Virginia Infantry of Sharpshooters. Present until on detached service on March 1, 1864 report, present on clothing receipt of August 11, 1864. He was captured, along with one of his neighbors George A. Pyles, during the third battle of Winchester, Virginia. On September 19, 1864. By General Sheridan's Forces and sent to Point Lookout, MD as a prisoner of war on September 26, 1864. Arrived at Harper's Ferry on September 26, 1864 on the way to Point Lookout, where Samuel Green and George Pyles were held prisoners that winter with tents as sleeping quarters. George Pyles died there, but Samuel was transfered to Aikens Landing, Virginia for exchange on March 15, 1865, his parole of honor was signed on May 11, 1865 in Charleston, Virginia. Samuel Green was 5'5" tall and had blue eyes and brown hair.

Sandy Bradley notes that Samuel was in love with Lucinda Arnott and Lucinda married Andrew Baker so Samuel married their daughter Mary Jane. Resided in Lillydale, West Virginia.
