| My wife and I are conducting genealogical research together on both her line (the Heidt and related families), and mine (the Jackson and associated families). The Jacksons were of Scotch-Irish descent, and related to Andrew Jackson according to family oral tradition. The oldest traceable family member with the Jackson surname, John Archibald Jackson (Archy), was born somewhere in Virginia about 1787, and appeared in Kentucky by 1810. He and his children migrated westward to northwestern Missouri in the mid to late 1830's, and subsequent generations spread out in all directions. The oldest traceable Heidt, Ernst Heidt, was born in Baden, Germany in 1820. By the late 1840's he had made it to New York City, and by 1870, he and his family had settled in the Lansing, Michigan area. While many of the Heidts remained in Michigan, they, too, scattered in all directions in later generations.
