Includes NotesNotes for Bernard T. Jackson Sr.:
Bernard Jackson Sr., grew up in Washinton PA., his father was the town's barber. Bernard had 3 sisters, Audrey, Romane, and Marta. His brothers included Charles, George, and Robert. Bernard Sr. father's name was Charles Jackson Sr. I'm not sure of my grandmothers name, but she was part Indian (Blackfoot) and Black. I have heard stories that her hair grew way past her waist, her complexion was the color of very dark brown. She was stout and always wore an apron around her. I can remember a picture I saw of her as child, she as standing outside with her hands rested on her full hips.
I have heard that my grandfather did get a chance to see me after I was born, but of course I don't remember that. My grandmother must have died way befor I was born. Charles died at an early age, and Romane followed many years after that. I slightly remember my aunt Romane, who never married nor had any children. She had a heart of gold and loved all of her brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. My father's family had a very strong bond between them. Bernard and Alda were married for 12 years before their first child was born. Exactly when they moved to Chicago to live is a mystery, but Michele was boren in Connesville, Pa. Soon after the birth of their daughter (2 years) another daughter wa s born to them, they so much wanted a son that they named my sister Narda after my father. Next came their much wanted son Bernard Jr., Walter who my mother named after her favorite brother Walter, (short for Brink after my uncle), Pearleen, and Cherlyn.
Cherlyn died at the young age of 18 months, which my mother never seemed to get over. Alda and Bernard stayed together until the very end of my mother's death. My father worked for NorthWestern railroad for many years, and came from era that the woman stayed at home and raised her children while the man earned his income to care for his family. In this day and age my father would be greatly surprised that the norm for today's standard is greatly different from their norm. My father remarried in his early sixties (his wife was white and 23 years old) and 2 more children were born to them Charles Fredrick Jackson, and Susan Marie Jackson. Bernard died November 28, 1969, his yougnest daughter Susan was just 6 weeks old.
