Our Family names include: Abat Augustin Baptiste Barthelomy Beaulieu Bertrand Chalaire Desargeant (Desarzans) Ducrey Ducrey Edmonds Francis Jacquet Joissant Laizer Lavigne Martin Meyi Ovide Panteleon Populus Reine In about 1839 Gustave Lavigne was born in New Orleans, LA. The youngest son of Francois Lavigne, a free man of color from Santo Domingo, who served during the War of 1812 in D'Aquin's militia, and Francoise Marie Populus, Guastave and his older brothers, Victor Jean Louis Lavigne and Henry Lavigne, followed their father's example and served during the Civil War with the USCT.Victor served as an officer, Gustave and Henry as enlisted men.Francois and Francoise Marie also had three daughters.Louise, Antoinette (died at 7 mos of age) and Dorthee. Gustave married Nataliet Anita Desarzant the daughter of Armand Desarzant in about 1867.Armand was the son of Jean David Laizer, alias Jean Louis Desarzant, and Justine Baquie, alias Francois Martin. Jean David and Justine traveled to New Orleans together on the Brigadeer Davis from Cuba in the year 1809.While Jean David was originally from Switzerland, Justine it appears was from Santo Domingo and was mulatto. Jean and Justine's union produced at least 4 children.Zelime Marie, brn 1806, died 1831.Louise Jeanne brn 1815, Jean Loius aka Maitre, brn 1818, Anastasie aka Toucoutou, brn 1823, and Armand, also know as BonBlanc brn 1828.Anastasie is a rather infamous figure in asmuch as she was the plantiff in a lawsuit in 1858, Desarzant vs LeBlanc, in which she was sueing to be recognized as "white".Anastasie lost the lawsuit and eventually moved to Cuba where she died in the year 1871.Her only surviving child was Maurice Eugene Abat, brn 1854.There is a fictional account of the story in a book titled"Toucoutou", written by Edward Larocque. Armand the youngest son, fathered at least 9 children.One of those was Nataliet, who married Gustave Lavigne.Together they had 5 children.Victorine Marie,brn. 01/05/1867, m. Adolphe Reine 06/09/1892, Gustave, brn. Abt 1870, Henrietta,brn 01/24/1874, m. Joseph Francis 12/19/1894,Octavie brn. abt 1877, m. Henry Landry 01/12/1898, and Nataliet brn abt 1879. Henrietta Lavigne and Joseph Francis are my great grandparents.There were three children from that union, Victoria, married Henry Baptiste , Luke brn. 06/06/1895, m.
