Richard, I didn't find your couple in McLean Cem. books 1 & 2. That isn't surprising & doesn't mean that they aren't there. I even have a (true) family story about a young widow losing her husband and trying to bury him by his father. The father's grave had only been marked with wood & was lost. Against her family's reasoning (she needed the money), Alice marked his grave in stone.

I didn't find your James M. in the 1850 census, but did find him in the 1860 for McLean. In the 1850 I did find a Joseph Alexander - 19 living in the home of Martha Noel, 66, NC; Mary A., TN; Francis M., 20, TN; Martha E., 1, KY.

1860 433
Alexander, James M.       60 Farmer
Martha (nee Pollard)       48
Sarah             21 married George Clouse
Wm. H.             19 married ____ Usher
James A.             17 married (1) Rachel Tanner who was born 15 May 1846 and died 25 May 1873 -
(actually James E.)            (2) Clarice Lockett. James says that he was born in Illinois in the census.
Christopher C.             15 married Sarah Scott Also born in Illinois
Selina Jane             12 married Wm. Harralson Born in Illinois
Ben F.             6 Ky married Mary Hodgins
Robt. M.             4 Ky

There was also a Wayland Alexander who was 21 and a teacher at Sacramento, KY. (He later established a college in South Carrollton which he ran for 20 years. He was born in Jefferson Co., KY on 26 June 1839 and died in Ohio Co. on 28 August 1911.)

Also in the 1860 is an L.G. Alexander, 45, Government Officer, born in VA. with wife Martha, 40, born in Kentucky. The have two children: listed: Lara G. J. (Laurence), 16, born in GA; Ann Amelia, 13, born in Kentucky. In the 1870, Laurence is a physician married to an Annie A. who is 20.

In the 1870 McLean Alexander, Mary is 56 still living with Wm. H. at 29, Benj. F. at 17, and Robt. M. at 13.

James has married Rachel Tanner and her brother Douglas Tanner is living with them.

I did find an early female marriage:

Susan Alexander to Clark Archabald on 4 Sept. 1823 - Muhlenberg

Also in Cemetery books: Richard Alexander who was born in 1877; Mercy C. who was born in 1831 and Rachel W. Tanner Alexander who was buried in the Mackey Cemetery.

The odds of James M. & wife being buried on their farm & graves now lost is pretty high. There were alot of early McLean families that left and went to Illinois in the late 1840's. Your James obviously didn't like the country & returned, or came to McLean for the first time between 1850-1860.

James Alexander is listed in the 1840 census of Oldham County, KY. His household is shown to have one male age 30-40 (probably James) one male age 40-50; 3 females under 5 years of age (probably Mary, Elizabeth, and Phoebe Sarah Alexander); 1 female age 20-30 (probably Mary Pollard Alexander)
